Just to let everyone know who visits immigration, yelling at the officials does not help. There was some nutcase there around noon who was yelling "Who did this crap?" and "Am I going to have to leave Korea? Am I!? and "OH MY GOD!" "Who did this? I paid $400 and you're going to deny everything because of one piece of paperwork!?"

And my favorite, "Tell him I'm going to punch him in his head...no, tell him I'm going to punch him right in the mouth when I see him"

I'm not sure what his problem was, but god, some people think they can do whatever they want when they're at immigration. I had the unforutnate luck of sitting next to this idiot, and I was ready to smack him upside the head myself.

Sounds similar to a guy (probably in his 50s) a couple years ago when my wife and I were at immigration to do some visa stuff. The guy seemed like he had knocked back a couple glasses beforehand and was yelling at the immi people. It was back when they first started having everyone fill out the one-page paper to do an educational background check. The guy refused to fill out the paper. He kept on shouting that he shouldn't have to do it. He was wearing some university's sweatshirt and kept pointing at the logo saying, "This was my school!" as if wearing a sweatshirt from there was proof.

Finally, my wife had enough and went over and asked him what was wrong. He started yelling at her; it was all I could do not to deck the guy and toss him out of the office. Still, my wife was patient (probably from all her years of having to deal with me... Wink ). He refused to fill out the info on the simple, one-page form. My wife did it for him. He then didn't want to sign it, but finally did. After he left, the immi people said something to the effect of, "It normally would have been just a formality, but now we're going to look at his credentials closely; he probably has a fake degree."

That was very decent of your wife. I wouldn't have had the time of day for him.

bluelake, if I'd been your wife, I would have walked away from the guy who was yelling. She's a pretty brave person.

If you've never felt the urge to scream at or smack an immigration officer in the throat, you've not had the full Korean experience! There should be a picture of one of them under the entry for "capricious" in the dictionary.

The thing was (from what I remember), he wasn't going to leave and just kept yelling. She figured the only way to get him to shut up and leave was to get the form filled out and pour him out the door.

My wife is an extremely considerate lady and will do what she can to help someone; in this case, however, she was doing it more for the immi people (Pohang branch--they're pretty good folks) and not the jerk.

Trust me, I have. I was even feeling quite angry at the person I was dealing with today, but raising my voice wasn't going to help.

The wicker man is not that kind of person. I've met him, one of the nicest and most decent people in Korea. I can't believe he would ever lose his cool in the way that was described in this thread.

I went to immigration...and they refused service in ANY language. I had the director of Gangwon education call them...and the were very polite. Korea, where power and status are everything.
