NO!
You can't weasel out of your share of guilt for what YOUR government has done. You claim to be a democracy, and as such your government is supposed to represent its people and its wishes.
You as a people need to create a real democracy in your country. Sorry to say it, but what you have now is not democracy. You have no real choice beyond Puppet A and Puppet B.
If you don't realise that your 2 parties are the exact same, merely with 2 different wrappings, well then... just keep choosing your sides, red or blue, and pretend to be innocent when the other team is making the choices. |
What planet are you from?
We never claimed to be a democracy, nor do we aspire to be.
TEXAS, Republic of, baby.
You might want to re-think the 2 party system you attempt to deride.
The R3VOLUTION is on, genius. |
It's still a representative government. And you have the power to do something about the fact that your institutions are failing to represent you properly, if you choose.
However, people from other nations have no right whatsoever to criticize you for that apoliticality because we, too, as much as you, let our governments get away with murder while we get on with our own selfish existences. (It's just less important for us to put the brakes on our governments than it is for you to put the brakes on yours). So everyone should put up or shut up. End of debate. |

Change it to "that loud flatulent obnoxious and overweight chick who's habit of brazenly strutting through the bar and knocking over other people's drinks and trampling over the dancers on the dance floor not only pisses off everybody else but also highlights the empty shell of her own ignorant and vacuous personality" and I might agree with you. |
True, but I bet you still subscribe to her culture. |
Well, she waddled over without being invited and sat her large ass cheeks on our laps. We don't really have much say in the matter, she will only leave after she has drunk our drink, eaten all our food and taken our souls.
(she's also too big to push off!) |
In any case, what exactly IS this culture the fat lady is rudely and loudly bragging about while i'm trying to get the phone numbers of all the non-american ladies in the bar?
Is it american tv? Is it hollywood? Yeah, i can see how idolising a bunch of self-absorbed bimbos and prissy sissy-boys (with the exception of john wayne and chuck norris- the former because he actually was cool and the latter, well, you know what happens to those who say bad things about chuck norris. Actually, nobody does because ... well, there are never any survivors) would lead one to fervent nationalism.
Or is it fast food and obesity? Proud to be american because.... mcdonalds was invented there?
Sport? Basket ball seems popular in most countries... not exactly threatening to supersede our national sporting preferences however. Baseball? Well, our girls do play something a bit similar.....
Fashion? To a minor extent. Maybe on impressionable kids. How to spot a yank in korea? Well, look for a grown man dressed in what looks like pajamas, an oversized basketball shirt on the outside of his overlarge t-shirt, or any paraphanalia bearing the name of a university he may or may not have graduated from. Anybody dressed like that where i come from would cause passerbys to convulse with explosive laughter and giggles. By the way, to those upset by the use of the word 'yank', i evoke the privilege granted to me as part of my australian citizenship to call a yank a yank if the shoe fits. I do not use the term on normal, decent humans with manners who happen to be from the USA.
Apple pie? well, ... i guess sometimes i might buy some in the frozen foods section of the supermarket. Wasn't actually aware americans had the patent on this. Anyway, i still prefer pavlova.
ummmm... what else is american culture that wasn't directly taken and adapted from english culture?
Bombing the shit out of countries with which you have opposing political views?
Civilians carrying handguns around, students turning highschools and universities into shooting galleries? Sadly, due to the oversaturation of media with american movies and tv other western countries are becoming americanised. Nothing I would be proud of if i was american.
I can't think of any desirable cultural phenomenon that has ever come out the states that other countries have adopted by conscious choice.
I bag out the states because of deep seated subconscious envy? No. Because I want to be american????? Ummmmm....... no.
I just, sometimes, as do the other bar patrons, wish the loud rude obnoxious fat lady would waddle away to another bar. Or at least just sit down and shut up. We'll call her back in if that little angry midget from north korea comes in and starts throwing soju in people's faces. |
To Evil Penguin: You are from Australia? Lets see: Aussie troops in Vietnam. Check. Aussie troops in Iraq. Check. Aussie troops in Afgahnistan. Check. So why is that you think Americans are war mongers while your countrymen are not?
Throwing out the obesity card. http://www.health-fitness.com.au/australia-now-fattest-country-in-the-world/. Australia may be the fattest country around now.
And an Aussie knocking American beer? Aussie beer is crap and since when have Aussies been discriminate drinkers anyway? |
You do understand that pretty much every country that goes into a war with you has to be dragged in?
When Iraq happened NZ was threatened with trade embargoes if they didn't support the US troops - similar for Vietnam I believe and I am sure other countries had to deal with similar shit. The US is a fucking bully. How many wars have the US started then dragged other countries into is the more pertinent question.
The problem is Americans are as brainwashed as Koreans when it comes to Nationalism. When you think your country is the best, and that others want to be like you, you know you have a problem. And Americans are not 'free'. You are like dogs bribed with 'treats'. |

Some of you guys have nationalism, too. But its a twisted and sick phantom of Korean or American nationalism. Today its anti-Americanism, but tomorrow it could change to anti-(insert name of most powerful country here). I recognize this apparition of nationalism because we have it in the states, too. Yes, d-bags just like yourself with an attitude just like yours exist in the states, too, the only difference is that they carry American passports. Just because you don't take any pride in your countries doesn't make the lack of such behavior any sort of virtue.
Anyway, your argument is just a giant strawman. When anyone in any discussion starts to say, "You (guys) think . . ." without each and every one within that group having expressed that opinion at all, its a dead give-away that the speaker is full of shit. |

And I hope for a time when America takes responsibility for the atrocities it's committed and the millions of innocent lives taken in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Vietnam, Cambodia. . .well, the list goes on, really.

Tell me, where are you from, and I'll give you a laundry list of the injustices your government has done. Nobody's innocent. |
Pointing out other injustices doesn't negate your own. It's been that way since kindergarten, at least where I'm from.
I have no problem with Americans the people but America the country has done some pretty despicable things and I'm not going to bite my tongue if it's bought up in the company of Americans to spare their precious patriotic feelings. |
Why need it be bought up at all? NOTHING you do or say will change it so why bother? |

....and add that all the men and women in the bar still want to go live and start a new life and create a family at that fat chick's house. |

Oh, I've met quite a few americans and I have yet to meet one that fits that loud obnoxious tourist stereotype everyone is so fond of talking about (though claim I say "aboot" one more time and I take it all back). |
hahaha have you forgotten to look in the stereotypical american tourist traps? I had a hoot in and Italian airport listening to the loud group of American tourists ranting and raving because the airline wouldn't let one of them board a plane when the ticket was for a different day (oops!) and another one threw a fit because security threw out her barbecue sauce. (Who the *$/% carries barbecue sauce in their carry-on?!)
Also, are the Chinese still pissed about that whole Chinese-head-tax thing? or the whole one chinese man dying for every mile built of the Canadian-pacific railway?
...our bad... |

i love how america is a country of 300 million people, with one of the most diverse populations in the world (yea, canada, youre even more "diverse" and "tolerant" and "multi-cultural" than we are, dont break your arm patting yourself on the back), yet we get judged on the occasional boorish loudmouth touron.
nevermind all the americans youve met that DONT fit the ugly american stereotype, by crikey, all americans are fat and lazy and ignorant. thats your story and and youre sticking to it |

Now tell me when did the word "meme" become popular? It was invented in the 70s by the not late but great Dr Dawkins but I swear I didn't hear it regularaly on the internet until about a year ago. Please give me a history of the word, specifically in terms of internet boards like this one. NOW! DO IT! |

Most Americans can understand that Bush has done damage to America's rep that will take a generation to fix. That's all there is to it.
The fact also remains that Americans let Bush in TWICE. No wonder they get dissed. |
