So I've been sitting at my desk for almost 2 months with nothing to do. 2 day's ago my coteacher walks in and tells me to complete a ten week writing plan for each grade in middle school and to divide each grade from beginner to advanced. Now I'm not going to argue the last minute crap, but for crying out loud I just don't get it.

She asks me today if it's done and I'm like I have a few general ideas on paper and that I'm asking a friend for her input. The way she talks to me these days is oudirectly from the pit of hades and I'm starting to think she has a problem with me. I tell her my ideas and I get the old one two about how it's too hard and how I WILL EMAIL HER THIS WEEKEND WITH ALL THE PLANS IN PLACE so that she can discuss them with the head teacher.

I just talked to the head teacher and reiterated that I am to teach conversation, not writing. Underscoring that I have no idea how to teach writing skills to kids who dont know how to say hello half the time. So I've come up with this plan for them to create cards and menus etc..... and apparently that's what they like.

I just get an inkling that they don't like me or that I'm going to get fired from my PS... something that is not justified in any way. Perhaps its me but damn it's pissing me off today.

Thoughts?

Jesse

You're not paranoid. My last co-teacher was very unreasonable. I asserted myself and things got worse between us.

My contract ends in May, so I shall wait and see if they'd be willing to renew my contract for a third year.

I don't think they'll fire you, but if they are trying to make life difficult, stand your ground. Life may become easier.

I've read some natives on bad terms with their school were still asked to stay on for another year. If you've done nothing wrong, I can't see why they'd fire you.

I suppose it is fear of the unknown.

My new wrangler who can't speak English but will teach English asked me this this morning "You makee new testee for eggee's?" I'm like, "what?" she said "you can do for me!" I'm like, "I don't think so cause the old wrangler did all that kind of stuff and I don't know what it's all about." Then she kinda grunted and went back to inspecting all my old wranglers documents or her computer.

Jeff - Your new co-teacher sounds like my previous nightmare handler. When we first met, at the end of a particular day, she handed me some worksheets, dropping an obvious hint she wanted me to do it at home.

I refused and she never tried it again. Be prepared. Laughing

Jesse - calm down and take a breath - this is your co-teacher, right? which generally means you are supposed to plan out these kinds of things together. It sounds like his/her E is at least understandable so how about a sit-down and discuss what exactly is needed and how to best go about it?

remember - this person has been asked to discuss this with you - and perhaps they felt uneasy about not knowing how to write in E very well so they wanted you to just do it; they thought it would be easy for you, ok?

I've taught writing to all levels, even science writing; there is a growing trend to teach E writing skills now and this really is a good thing despite what many teachers might worry about (perhaps their own insecurity?).

Korean education didn't always stress writing in its own language - that's only come about in very recent times - which could be another reason for your CoT's insecurity, and trust me, I have a feeling they are quite insecure about this.

Take it one step at a time - try opening with "I really want to do a good job for the students but I need your input on what's appropriate. What do you think about ____ ?" and go from there.

it's doable.

and keep focusing on the small amount of time you have w/the students, so don't over load yourself or them. Just an introduction to writing is all that is expected.

I bowled over my PS when I insisted the students learn to write something - anything in E.

It doesn't matter what language one is learning - writing one's name in that language is fundamental so that's the place you start. For many classes, "My name is Kim Su Bin" will be their entire semester to accomplish - but there - they DID accomplish something, ok?
