|
|
In the past few months the only ads I've seen on Discovery that aren't self-promotional are a couple for the 'Seol of Asia' image campaign. Despite the frequent, repetative ads, this station must be generating almost no revenue from Korea. How does it stay afloat?
(I really like it, btw, though a bit more variety would be nice). |

aside from subtitles, it is no different than the discovery channel you'll find in hong kong, thailand, indonesia, malaysia, and likely all over eastern asia. that's why they always show additional airing times for programs. i believe it is usually carried in star packages, which are pretty limited here in korea.
not sure how the funding works, but since discovery "korea" really only has to worry about subtitles on programs that are heavily re-aired throughout each montb, i can't imagine it costs a significant amount. |

| Cable channels also make money from the cable companies. For example, a cable company will pay the Discovery Channel say, 600 won per month per subscriber to carry the channel. |

| Anyone see the "Hip Korea" thing about rain being a superstar? I thought discovery was educational. |

| Apocalypse How was interesting. I think they depend on subscriptions and package deals for funding. Most of the time it`s just taking the US stuff and subtitling it for Asia |

| It would be nice if they ran some of the more interesting things earlier in the evening instead of at midnight. That drives me insane. |

Discovery Channel is too pro-Asia |

| This doesn't address the question. However, while I like Discovery Channel and it has some good programming, the repeating of programs ad nauseum gets 'old'. I find BBC Knowledge to have superior programming... and far fewer 'repeats'. I've also noticed the Korean Science Channel seems to take some of the feed (programs) from BBC Knowledge and 'broadcast' it a couple of hours later. |

That "old western woman" was Susan Sarandon. She co-starred in Speed Racer with Rain.
The Discovery Channel here is geared toward Asian audiences, hence the "pro-Asia" bend.
I find the BBC Knowledge repeats the same programs multiple times in one day. I don't mind it, because if I miss Top Gear at 9:00AM then it's on again at 2:00PM, 9:00PM and 12:00 midnight. |

Yes, but the repeats are not to the extent of Discovery's - the same progams multiple times a day: next week, next month, next year... |

| I just downloaded several discovery 1 off shows and seasons of other shows to watch on my PMP. |

The timing works perfectly for my schedule. I guess you aren't in an evening hagwon! |

Well, I'm not at a hagwon at all. Usually I end up in bed around 11 o'clock. Even then, It's rare I even turn on the TV any more it's so damn depressing how little there is that is actually on.
I'd probably be better off looking for the programs on a torrent search site like someone else mentioned. |
