Restaurants Face Tight Hygiene Inspection
By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter
The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said Sunday that it will launch a round of inspections of Chinese restaurants and delivery food franchises nationwide from Monday to monitor their kitchen hygiene.
Those who use used ``recycled foods,'' or foods that have already been served at the table, will face a suspension of their business license for a month, the administration said.
The KFDA and the prosecution will establish a special joint unit for food monitoring. Those found using poor quality ingredients or toxic condiments to make artificial flavoring will be severely punished, the authority said.
The crackdown plan came after state-run TV KBS reported unhygienic practices at some Chinese restaurants earlier last week. Crews investigating 15 restaurants shot footage of cockroaches running around kitchens, owners using old oil in frying foods, chefs cooking without washing their hands or wearing proper aprons and garments, and cooking while smoking cigarettes.
The program revealed that some expensive restaurants also using unhygienic food practices and ingredients that had passed their expiration dates.
Delivery franchises for fried chicken were also accused of re-using oil up to ten times, and one shop used oil that contained benzopyrene, a cancer-causing agent.
After the airing, an association of fried chicken franchises said it will undertake self-regulation to upgrade the quality of oil used.

Why don't I find it surprising that the target of this investigation, instead of all facilities serving foodstuffs to diners, is Chinese restaraunts? |

3 cases of food poisoning in under 5 years from various gimbap establishments in and around seoul leads me to believe that they need to check a little closer to home. i'm sure there are others here who'd agree. god forbid the gimbap heavens and countries be questioned though! heresy and treason! |

I had food poisoning four times in the first 3 years I was here.
Kimbap 2x
Issac Sandwich 1x
Costco bulgogi bake 1x
These were emergency room, IV drip type food poisonings cases. I can usually tough it out until it passes through my system, but not these times.
They shouldn't only be focusing on Chinese food that's for sure. |

Food poisoning could happen anywhere especially the meat restaurants. They use the same scissors and tongs to handle the meat, cut the meat, cut the kimchi and dish out the salad. If that isnt asking for e.coli then I dont know what is |

They never wear hair-nets in Korea. Simple things like this will prevent hair from ending up in your food as has happended to me on numerous occasions.
I dread to think of all the faecal matter in my food cos the filthy scum never wash their hands. |

I just want them to clean up those shared bathrooms that restaurants (and everyone else) uses. I walk into a seemingly nice eatery or bar, after a few drinks, ask where the bathroom is and then told, "go out the door, turn left, take the next left, it's at the end of the hallway" (or at the back of the building). Jeez...walk in, and woooooooooooooosh, the stink hits, the mess on the floor and I barely get out in time. Well, I have to strengthen my kegal muscles anyways, so I better hold it. |

You're not seriously calling Jajanmein or tangsuyuk Chinese food?
Aren't these places mostly run by Koreans? |
