What do you say in a snappy, witty but not toooooooo rude a way when a fellow teacher who has been working for 4 months, wears the same shirt for all but the last 2 weeks and either it or he smells like it; who has holes in his shoes and socks and complains about it but hasn't bought new shoes; who never accepts an invitation to go out to eat because he is 'tired' but who also says he sleeps 13 or 14 hours a day; who never plans lessons....and in the end says he has W60 and it's payday but he wants to borrow money to get through the weekend and doesn't want to wait to be sure we were paid on time?

Advice please.

I was caught off-guard so all I could come up with was, "What? Do I look like a f***** bank?"

I know. It was not my greatest moment. Tips would be appreciated.

Depends on what kind of person you are:

If it was me, and the guy was not an A-hole, I would take him to Lotte or E-mart and buy him a cheap pair of shoes, a couple of shirts, deodorant, socks, underwear, and some food.

Then, I would take him out for a beer. I'd listen to his story. See where he's coming from, what kind of mesed up situation he's in (mentally or whatever), and then go from there.

I've done it for people I don't work with. It'll cost you 60K won. And, you might learn something.

The guy is depressed, he doesn't trust the school and is looking to see if someone has his back if they burn him.

First signs of depression are sleeping a lot and not looking after clothes and grooming.

While this guy does sound like he could use some money. Come on people. He is an English teacher not a homeless guy...

Depression is an angle I hadn't thought of, but the new iPod and cell phone this month argue against that being the cause. Buying one or more W20,000 pizzas a week in lieu of paying to have his gas range connected also lead me to think that the cause is closer to irresponsibility.
