Hey,

I'm looking for a gym that has a more "bodybuilder" kind of atmosphere. Somewhere with big guys who lift seriously. Any gyms out there where champs train at?

South of the river is best but let me know the name and location of anything you might know please.

If you are trying to be funny put a smiley face after what you typed.

If not oh well, each to there own. You may not know what the guy wants. And that is fine. But comments like that don't help the chap answer his question.

What I notice is Koreans don't really cater to groups like that - it is predominately all show gyms - like, oh yes I go to such and such gym but what they offer in regards to equipment etc is not really up to par.

Me personally I go to a gym in Mullae called Spopark - cost is ok but the thing I like is that it is big and has good equipment and free-weight apparatus. Have only seen 2 big guys at this gym. Most of the Koreans are very slim Confused but spend most of the time looking at the mirrors at their muscles they just developed.

Another gym I went too (not joined because it was so expensive) is around Omokyo/Mokdong called Julliet Gym. Some big guys I saw there with big weights as well.

It depends though. I think you need to be more specific about where you live for others to give better advice about what you are after.

Also, you can ask you co-teacher/hagwon?? to do a bit of helpful searching for you - they could probably give you a list of gyms around where you live and you could go to them personally and look at them and judge if it is right for you.

For me I noticed that 9 times out of 10 the gyms here are small (at least the weight area is) with weights not very big for real challenges.

Good luck with your search.

I'd agree with a lot of what sigsmundsmith says, from the little of the gyms that I've seen.

yet I'm lucky enough to have one close to my house that fulfills my needs, even if decidedly imperfectly.

are you a big guy who lifts seriously? how big and how serious are you?
or are you just looking for that kind of "atmosphere"??? (it's not really necessary for you to still make whatever progress you need unless you're already at quasi Cro-Magnon stage)

"the champs" don't train in Korea. You'll be lucky to find more than 5 guys at any gym who have any significant amount of muscle mass, by virtue of what a dedicated lifter would consider "significant"

Are you looking for a gym to work out in? Or are you just wanting to ogle big muscular men?

I searched "bodybuilding Seoul" on Google and this blog entry was a result: http://thedailykimchi.blogspot.com/2006/09/five-time-mr-seoul-bodybuilding-champ.html

Do you think this guy is from the same gym?

Can you give me some directions of how to get there from the stations?

Well, I don't have a co-teacher because I'm not a teacher, but I've been here six months and have looked at most of the gyms in my area. I'm willing to travel now, so that's what I just asked about Seoul generally. Also, it's not about the gyms themselves, I just want to meet some pro bodybuilders to see if they can sell me some supplements.

1. California Fitness Centre Myungdong and Apkujeong were the hardcore bodybuilder centrals. I knew, not in any real formal sense, the top bodybuilders in the country. They were big (for Asian bodybuilders) and were very candid about their juicing. With those two gyms gone, I have no idea where they have since dispersed.

2. But he will serve your purpose - and I'm assuming the purpose is to GET STUFF (*ahem*). That's what you're really asking, isn't it? No shame in that. I think they will tell you what one told me: the pharmacies around Dongdaemun Stadium are the places to easily access the juice. I heard that it's about 5000 per shot at two shots per week (injectable vials of course) for a three month cycle - shouldn't be too much.

Some of these bodybuilders I'm refering to also post on youtube. You might contact them there if they know english. And some of them do.

haha.....this always kills me. Why do some people equate lifting pieces of iron with toughness? Like in that movie "Full Metal Jacket" the drill instructor says..."it's a hard heart that kills."

I just read this over at the 'Hole.

#28: Probably a little farther than you seem to want to go, but Eagle Fitness in Sinchon (on the main drag that runs into Sinchon from Yonseis frontgate) is good and stable (the gym is owned by the same owner as the pharmacy on the first floor, who also owns the entire building). Ive been going there for three years, and I know its been there longer. Daily, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual payment plans. Good selection of equipment, including a very good assisted dip/pullup machine, and full range of dumbbells up to 150 lbs. Good and helpful staff, and a regular core of personable ironheads, Korean and non).
