So On friday I went into work expecting my pay would be in the bank by mid afternoon. My contract says I am to be paid on the 25th, I have never been paid on the 25th usually its about 3 or 4 days late one time it was 8 days late. So at 4, (I get done teaching at 8 so this was half of the shift) I went to the bank and it was not in my account. I went to my directors office and asked where my pay was. She told me that I am not paid till the end of the month. I pointed out the contract and she flipped out! We had about a 10 minute back and forth in less than quiet voices. She was telling me a bunch of non-sense about I get paid on the 31st and that payday was the day I started work. I asked her why we even have a contract and that she wrote it, not I. At this point I told her I wasnt going to work until I got paid and she started throwing papers all over her office and telling me she would lock me out of my apartment. I immediately called her bluff and told her I would just go to the labor board and pension office about her shady business practices and she was livid. She called her husband, Kevin, the guy I deal with mostly. He told me I would be paid by the end of the day. I didnt really believe him, especially after he tried to tell me that my contract wasn't really mine, but formatted for the other teacher, which was a lie because I know she is paid on the 9th, but I continued to work. Finally, around 1030 PM, I was told the money was in my account. Anyway, they threatened to fire me about 3 times and basically told them to please do me that favor. I have another job lined up, but I dont really want to move and deal with all the visa BS...so anyway, on goes the drama. Let me know what you think... I'll keep you informed. |

i would definitely call the Labor Board and just let them know what's going on
this would be just to strengthen your case in the event of them firing you |

You can only go to the Labor Relations Commission with specifics... and one's pay must be 14 days late for them to even consider a complaint/application for a hearing. They don't keep records of 'maybes'. |

They probably have bills that they want to pay before paying you. Is it a small school? Sounds like it. You see, you're last on the list of importance. Koreans freak out when they're late in paying bills to electric companies, etc. because it affects their credit. That being said, it doesn't absolve them of the fact that they've been paying you late and not saying a word to you. |

Well... yes... I figure it's a good idea to be informed of the laws of the country in which I live and work.
Contrary to what many believe, a foreigner has no rights in the ROK (except as guaranteed under the Constitution) and the laws of one's home country do not apply. |
