So my school has told me that I have to teach a conversation class after school this year and that they consider this to be "within my work hour" because I do not teach the max of 22.

My contract says that I work 8 hours per day like a Korean Govt. employee. It also says my school can change my hours. They said they will not pay me overtime so I suggested letting me come in an hour later to make up for the difference. They will have none of it and I am not giving in on this one.

There are two clauses for extra pay. The one is in excess of 22 hours at 20,000 WON and the other is 6000 WON.

Which one should I push for and how should I deal with this? BTW, the principal isn't all that reasonable and is perfectly comfortable at yelling!

They can get you to teach 22 classes within 830-430. After that is after school. Some of us refuse to teach for no extra money in the 340-430 slot as well because Korean teachers get extra for that slot.

What time do they want you to teach. They are kind of being jerks for expecting after school classes to fill in for the regular classes and you can bet someone is making cash.

Just tell them at 4:40 you are going home and if they want you to teach some special class they will have to schedule it before that. Also, tell them you'd be able to do work after hours at 40,000 per hr. That clause about changing ur work hrs is for a special circumstance like a one time camp out of school or something like that. You can also bet that this after school class won't be for free for the students. Your principle is trying to line his pockets. Be firm.

School ends at 3:40 and I will teach up to 4:30 without question. However they want me teach after that time slot.

Yeah I agree, if they change your work hours then you should at least get to come in late, anything after 4:30 is overtime. Call someone at epik/epic/smoe and get them to tell the school.

I get paid from 30000 to 100000 for the 340 to 430 slot. No friggin way I would do after 430 for less than 50000.

My school wanted me to do that last year. They said there was no money in the budget for 'overtime' so I cut a deal with the principal for extra days of holidays calculated at: four, 45-minute classes = one day off.

It's just this type of thing that they warn about working in Korea. However major of a problem this is, and it is, it's very minor compared to problems other workers face.

Believe it or not.

But you're cutting into the omnipotent, omniscient principal's profits. Do you at least bow to him or stand up when he enters a room?

you work 8 hours a day (including lunch), those 22 hours of teaching must be within the 8 hours. they can rearrange your schedule, ex. 9-5pm or 8-4pm, but it still should be 8 hours unless they're paying you OT
