|
|
Ahoy gents (and ladies)
I'm just at this amaaaaazing love motel in Seoul - the missus went out for a minute but I've been having this question on my mind all day- I'm heading to Thailand in two days and I'm not sure if my debit/credit card will work there.
Its a Samsung Visa Card from the post office bank - it worked about half the time in France, but I'm getting a little nervous, but if anybody used theirs in Thailand, I'll be happy again
Thanks everyone!
(sorry if this is supposed to be in the travel forum) |

After being here for a long time and hearing stories from people stranded overseas with no access to cash after someone at their bank guaranteed said access, you're better off making other arrangements.
How tight are you with the missus? Would she be willing to let you deposit cash in her account and get another card for you to use overseas? Do you trust her enough to do that?
Traveller's cheques are another option, but I've also heard that most Korean banks don't honor the insurance on lost/stolen cheques.
Anyway, don't count on being able to use your card. I found that prepping myself for the worst-case scenario pays off here more often than not. |

thanks for the reply seoulsucker - yeah we're pretty tight - i'd trust her for sure - she has a mastercard that I was going to throw a bunch of cash into, but she said something about how the fee when you take out cash is huge - like 30% - true? |

Cash advances on Korean cards can have rates as high as 30%APR, Yes. Works out to about 2.5% if you pay it off when you get the bill and don't carry a balance forward.
ALSO, Korean cards do NOT ALLOW cash advances for the full limit amount. Typically they are about 1-2 million won in the foreign currency that you are taking. |

I've just returned from Thailand and can confirm that your Samsung card will work just fine.
As the other posters have already said, you'll need to be careful with cash advances (fees, etc. etc.)
For normal credit transactions at hotels and the like, you'll have absolutely no problems. Make sure they're legit, though! |
