Are any other PS teachers thinking about switching to a hagwon? I'm relocating to Busan from Geoje in September and can't decide if I should stick with EPIK or go the hagwon route.
The PS pay in Busan is awful, and EPIK has decreased our vacation time, plus I could get stuck with a school that makes me deskwarm and teach camps all vacation, in which case PS would not be worth the crap money, longer shifts, constant miscommunication, bigger classes, etc., especially now that the Won is so worthless.
On the other hand hagwons are scary, especially now that we're in a recession, and many of them are closing and/or dumping FTs. Also, I want to live with my boyfriend who needs to start work a month or two before me, and he is planning on finding a job with a big apartment and I would take the EPIK housing allowance and just move in later. I don't know how I would do this with a hagwon. Do hagwons even offer housing allowances? And if they did, would you trust them.
If it wasn't for this complicated living arrangement and my cat I'd probably just go to Taiwan, but... |

Go to Masan , Gimhae, Changwon, work for Gyeongsang-namdo province and you will be close to Busan with better working conditions. |

I can't. It has to be one of the better areas of Busan. I am a city person and living in a small-ish town close to Busan has depressed me greatly. My boyfriend too. If it wasn't for the fact that cold is my kryptonite I would not even consider anywhere but Seoul for a split second.
Is Busan EPIK known for poor working conditions? |

Not known for good conditions.
They will not guarantee you a specific school or area. |

Some of them do. If you're going to trust them with the rest, why wouldn't you trust them about the housing allowance? Or do you just mean in general. Since you're in country, you CAN meet them and see the school and decide on a case-by-case basis if you want to trust them. I know you're depressed now and that sounds hard, but it isn't really. You'll see when you do it. |

Thanks, Draz. I might just find a decent hagwon instead. |
