My principal came to my office for the first time in months today and started babbling to me in Korean. Afterwards he told my new co-teacher (who can barely speak English) that I should know how to speak Korean, and apparently was angry that I did not know more.

I'm really angry with my school right now for giving me two new co-teachers who are barely able to speak any English at all. My principal doesn't know I'm angry because I can't speak to him and no one is brave enough to translate for me.

So since when are Korean English teachers not expected to know English, but foreign teachers are expected to know Korean?

If I get fired for not knowing Korean, I'll wish them good luck in finding a Native English speaker who can speak fluent Korean to replace me. Especially in a tiny, crappy city like this one.

Seriously, tell them to go *beep* themselves.

That's just ridiculous on so many levels. Bilingual = an extra ability = more money. A hell of a lot more than public schools pay.

What crap. Don't put up with it for a second.

I'm curious, because I don't hear most FT say this. Please elaborate.

I just say that I am learning Chinese and speak a bit of French because those are international languages.

I guess I now know why I am not that popular. Honest but not popular.

When my last co-teacher took me to the Principal to make a complaint against me, the Principal also mentioned I've been here for a while and should know some Korean.

I replied by saying it would be good to know Korean, but it was difficult to learn another language.

The way some Koreans behave, causes me to not want to learn anything about Korea. Mind you, I'm lazy, I just want Korean money really. Laughing

You shouldn't listen to anything the co-teachers tell you. If they're willing to translate for him but not translate for you, they are worthless. Use some profanity directed towards them and their family, and then refuse to speak with them again for the rest of your contract. They'll know you're angry.
