Can anyone recommend a good CD or some musicians to start me out on?

I really like the bowed and plucked string instruments.

Neither of those are traditional and only the "cheesy" one is actually Korean. I'd argue Pachabel's Canon is pretty cheesy too.

Traditional music is kind of rough around here, lots of warbly screaming and clanging. I wish they'd do more with it before bowing down like everyone else to the god that is western tonality. I haven't come across any decent recordings, but they must be out there.

There are some artists who combine modern and traditional instruments, but can't recall their names right now.

What you want, I expect, is some Kayageum sanjo music. But don't stop there! This thread on another board will set you up right (oh, and the Kyobo bookstore at Gwanghwamun is a good place to shop if you don't want to go all the way out to the Gugakwon).

You might like to look at http://www.ncktpa.go.kr/ as it has lots of general info about Korean traditional performing arts. You might like to search for 국악 (guk ak), which is Korean traditional music. If you go into a music shop, you can find many CDs of that genre. On YouTube, there are also many to choose from; if you put in the particular instrument (가야금, 대금, etc.) you will find many more.

Baek In-Young - Kayageum Sanjo (sorry, not sure how it's romanized) is a complete mind-melter. Never fails, just a virtuosic and passionate performance of one of the world's great musics.

while i was looking up some videos on youtube, i stumbled on an intersting one. i thought north koreans might be more into the traditional thing and i guess i was wrong. here is a north korean girl playing modern 20 string gayageum instead of traditional 12 string one.

Well, "hands down the best" is probably an oversimplification, but yeah, that's fantastic. Seriously, though, try to get a hold of the Baek I mentioned above.

North Korea pretty much "modernized" all its gugak instruments. It's pretty weird, their completely different up there.
