I have to admit it I came to Korea for the cash. Korea bores the hell out of me, but I like the comforts of a fat cheque.
When I was in China I was broke a lot but I was having the time of my life.
Today I did a search on the currency converter and 2.2 million only equals 9700 Rmb.
Big reality cheque for me seeing that. I have always been comparing the won to the loonie. Seeing that today I would suggest China tops here now for fun, experience, making friends, eating...... and now for the mighty buck.
Serves me right for selling out. |

DD, where were you in China and what was so much fun about it? And you say its easier to make friends, or you just like the people in China better than in Korea? |

I lived in Wuhan, Shenzhen and Shanghai. China just has something about it that I feel happy living in. For some reason Korea is really mundane for me.
As one famous Chinese author said " I would rather be happy living in an ashtray than depressed living on a sunny beach"
China is dirty but it is alive and vibrant. |

China is def. an ashtray but same as you I had fun there for my contract. Vibrant is pushing it...a little.
There were these weird flocks of birds that would circle around. I could have sworn that they were just odd varieties of plastic bags, but I'm no expert. |

How much did you make in China? What about the cost of living there? |

How did you often become broke? It's not that expensive to booze or eat out. |

I've been noticing this trend for about a year now. Unless you have a real reason to be in Korea, such as family, investments of money or time, or generally interested in the culture, a college grad might really want to check out China. When this economic crisis is over in 2012 and things start to pick up, I will guess China will be hands down a better place to work in terms of cash and experience. Right now, with a top paying ESL gig in China, it might already be better. |

China can be cheap and it can be expensive depending on where you go.
I have been invited out for dinners where 4 people spend 6000 rmb in one meal. I was lucky not to be paying those bills. When I was in shanghai I had a rich family that took me out for dinner once a week to those kind of expensive restaurants.
You can live cheap in China. I know one guy that saved 90% of his pay by eating 1rmb street noodles twice a day and school lunches. |
