I got fired recently (unfairly imho)
and went to mmigration to get an exit order as suggested by so many here.. but the immigration people say that i have to go there with my employer. Even when i said that we're not on the best of terms the lady was like "sorry have to come together"
When i asked if there's anyway for me to end the visa by myself she said no...
something i missed here or have the rules changed? |

Can't you just leave the country, hand in your alien card and that will cancel your visa? |

I'd like to know that too. For various reasons, I will not be giving notice when I quit (still a while away), and will be here for 9 days after that. Another thread suggested getting an exit order, but does anyone know if I'll just be ok without one? What can they really do? |

The way I understand it(and this is an area I'm a bit murky on), is that you only really need to get an Exit Order if you want to come back to Korea to teach, as all the Exit Order does is cancels your current visa.
According to the guy interviewed by The Midnight Runner (the one that took his Hagwon to the labor board and won), you should be able to get an exit order on your own. If they won't give you one at immigration, I think I would be tempted to take the phone number of my country's embassy here and phone them whilst at immigration, as technically they're trying to keep you in the country.
That said, you can just get on a plane and leave without one. They can't stop you from doing that. |

BS to it all!!!!! Just go to a different Immigration Office. It's a pain in the arse but that's what I'd do if I wanted to come back to Korea before my visa expired. Busan, Daegu, Pohang, Yangyang etc.... all have offices. Or go to the same one on a different day and hope to talk to a different official.

They might have had that confused with a LOR, which is now a bit silly to require if a teacher can get an exit order on their own. So, someone at immigration is thinking pre-2007. |

Is this thing only needed if you plan on coming back before the original visa has expired? I really will not. I just want to hand over the arc and be gone. If you quit, stay for 9 days with no exit order, then leave forever, is anyone going to stop me at the airport or anything? |

you have 30 days to leave the country after you get an exit order.
you have 14 days after you are fired to report to immigration.
the only reason you have to go to immigration is to cancel your visa therefore enabling you to obtain another job before your prior visa expires
if you just want to leave the country and not return in the next year or so then just hand in your ARC at immigration and say "Cancel" |

No. No one will stop you. You are not a prisoner.
If all you want to do is leave Korea, then you can. You can just hand in your ARC at the airport and leave.
However, if you stay 9 days after quitting suddenly, your former employer could make trouble for you by reporting you for some criminal offense. That's why the "midnight run" is so popular. It avoids those possibilities.
If you have a multiple entry visa, and you are leaving while your visa is still active, you can even keep the ARC. They want you to hand it in, of course, but if you're never coming back, there's nothing they can do. They think that you'll be coming back. But, if you keep your ARC, you could have trouble at some future date if you change your mind and want to come back. |

If you keep the ARC, do what I did: I told them I gave it to them at the airport when I left and they should be more careful with my information I still have that card too |

They don't know where I live, would that help? The thing is, we're leaving because my husband's in the military, and we've got no choice. I'm not giving them notice because there's no way in hell they'd give me my last pay check, but I cannot work up until the day we leave. For starters, I'd never get paid for that last week, and working in a job I hate for no money isn't my cup of tea. Also, there is just so much to organise before we leave (an entire apartment to pack up and clean, three pets to get ready to fly, a whole freaking immigration green card palaver I'm dealing with)....I really need those 2 weeks to pull everything together. I'm for sure never coming back, so that's not a problem. I'll be more than happy to hand over the arc forever. Even if they did 'report me' for something....I haven't freaking done anything wrong. I'm not breaking any laws. We're on military orders out of here, so there's not much they can do (I hope??) |
