I'm hoping to come to Korea to teach very soon. I'm a guy with long hair - around shoulder length - how will this be received with potential employers? Of course, I keep it very clean... |

There are plenty of people here with long hair. It doesn't seem to be much of an issue. |

At a conservative public school it might not be viewed too favourably, but it will be about on par with a goatee or shaved head and not as bad as a tattoo. At most hagwons (private academies) it will be fine. |

Thanks for the quick response - you might just have saved me from a hasty haircut! |

The most important thing is for it to be well kept; clean and neat. |

Get a hair cut. It's not 1990 anymore.
If you want to work in a country where appearance counts then get it cut. |

It's not 1990 in Korea anymore either. If you prefer long hair, and you keep it neat(out of your face) it shouldn't be a problem. I have longer hair, but not shoulder length, and i get compliments from my CT's and Principals all the time. |

I second this. As hard as I try not to judge people by looks, when I see guys with long hair, I feel compelled to ask them, "OMG, can I borrow your time machine?" |

Don't worry. There are long-haired teachers here in Korea. Some even with beards.
As for the history of short hair in Korea, I believe that it was one of the first presidents who decreed that if Korea were to appear as more westernized in the business world, then men should have short hair. |

You guys are joking, right?
What does the year have to do with it? Why does the OP have to conform to your standards? |

Huh? since when has long hair simply been a 90's fad? Hippies in the 60's, feather cuts in the 70's, hair metal in the 80's, grunge in the 90's, indie music of the 00's - what I like about this era is the fact that you can do what you want. One of my best friends has a number one and the other has hair to his shoulders. Both are viewed as attractive and fashionable by the laydies and they both have a very individualistic sense of style. I think YOU need to get into your time machine and come to 2009.
OP - do what you want. The people here aren't THAT conservative. I have a sleeve and have had long (broken) discussions with my VP, my house adjumma and many guys and women who are fascinated about the process. Sure, they may have been thinking I am a low life scummy criminal, but my dress and behaviour has proven otherwise. |

Ha....Reminds me of that old Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young song that starts....
"Almost.......cut my hair, ...........it happened just the other day". |

I presume that c*** is the female anatomy you are talking about with all this long hair and bush talk. |
