I always say India is the best 6 months place because you get a six month visa and there is so many interesting and diverse places to see.
There is also a culture of western drop outs that have perfected the life of just hanging out and they are quick to help you do the same.
I wish I didn't enjoy work so much as I love hanging out in India. My ex bought an amazing place for 30000 U.S. and put about 200,000 in the bank at 10% interest( India has high interest rates) so she can live off the interest.
I get bored after 2 months of hanging out and then return to work life.
To sum it up India is a good place to chill but as the previous poster said the Phillipines sounds good as well.
Many people enjoy Thailand as well. |

ah, decisions, decisions!
For some reason India feels more intimidating to me than say, the Philippines. It's probably just a matter of having been to SEA a few times (though I realize each country is different) whereas India seems like something else all together. I'd like to go. I'm not sure if I'd like to go for six months to chill. I just don't know really.
Which area in India would you spend six months or so in? As I said, we're not really looking to travel that much (obviously we're not going to chain ourselves to the house either). We'd like to put down some faux roots for a while.

I absolutely love the Philippines....my favorite country in this region by far.
However, the OP sounds like he just wants to chill with the gf and read, write, paint, etc. BOOKS and such...Thailand, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia are FILLED with cheap DVDs and BOOKs and a million little distractions ideal for someone who just wants to chill in one place for 6 months.
The Philippines has 7000+ islands...but few if any have much of anything to do but generally scuba diving....and scuba diving is an expensive diversion. I love the Philippines a lot because I love island hopping and the music there. But backpacker culture is pretty much non-existant...and backpacker culture is basically what generates the 'hangout' to read, write, paint, etc. There are countless upon countless of used book shops scattered throughout SE Asia...but fairly absent from the Philippines (not backpacker oriented).
My feeling anyways. |
