|
|
Now that I have solved my missing CBC problem I'm ready to address a second problem that has been bothering me all winter.
Last fall, just before it got cold, I was drinking a Coke in my car. I needed to stop at the mart in the apt complex, so I set the can on the dashboard and went in to buy bread. Came out, turned on the ignition and pulled away from the curb only to have the (forgotten) can of Coke fall directly on my gear shift under the dashboard. I grabbed the can as fast as I could, but still, a lot of Coke ran down into the slot.
Ever since then, it has been harder than heck to move the gear shift out of Park into Reverse and Drive. Especially in the mornings. It just sticks. When it was cold, I think the Coke froze down in there. Now that it is warmer, I think the Coke has freeze-dried some and it is still sticking pretty bad.
Anyone have a solution for getting sticky Coke out of a gear shift?
PS: I wrote SPILLING in capital letters so people wouldn't make cracks about POURING.

Maybe the coke ate away at the lubricant, take it to mechanic before you have to buy a new tranny. |

Yeah, and you'd probably have to go to Brazil or Thailand to find one. |

My guess is that it is just the sugary gunk which is the problem. You could try some type of alcohol, isopropal from the chemist. Remove as much of the cosmetic stuff as you can. just get a screw driver and get to work (depending how new the car is will effect how easy it is to dismantle)

The coke will be sticky as hell and will be covered in dust and dirt hence making the gear mechanism sticky. I doubt it will affect the transmission itself. I would take it to a car was and get them to take a gander. I'm sure it's not that uncommon of an occurrence. |

Thanks, guys. It looks like 'mechanic' is the best solution. (I was hoping for a magic non-practical answer but will happily accept what I got.) |

Yeah, that's a complicated thing to fix. You'd have to take the console off and and disconnect some wiring in order to clean everything. You'd need proper tools/screwdrivers for that. The only thing that can be used is mildly soapy water. Preferably dishwashing detergent. You might have to take the ashtray and other things out... You'd have to use something that would soak it up/clean it well like towels. Then after cleaning it you'd have to dry it with a towel and get in all the nook and cranies fairly quickly maybe. Then you'd have to grease up under around the gear shift, I'm guessing (after it's dry)and then put everything back together again.
It's quite a job and you'll probably have to fork out a few bucks for it. I think it might be quite cheap in Korea (if you're lucky). I'd say you're going to have to pay maybe a good 200,000 won. Maybe cheaper. Hope so for your sake. |

Try spilling some anti-coke down there. Pepsi?
Sorry I can't actually be helpful. |

It all depends on the car. If it is slightly older do it yourself all you will need is a screw driver, remove as much of the plastic crap as you can. you should be able to get to where the sticky crap is. Get some isopropyl alcohol put it in a spray bottle and spray. hot soapy water should also work (but you really want some thing that will just evaporate).
If it is a new car don't be cheap and go take it in and do it proper
It all |
