Some jobs I've looked at have quoted a "visa sponsorship fee", or advertised that they 'waive visa fee' (WOW). This sounds like a load of crap. Does anyone know what this fee actually is, or if varies from workplace to workplace? Does it actually exist? Sounds kind of shady for an industry that should view something like that as a fixed cost.

Any ad that charges a fee to hire you is a scam.

The contract sez if I break before a year, I have to pay it back, not that I owe anything up front. I'd just like to know what this amount may be.

I asked a recruiter friend what the fee is she gets, she told me its one month of the teachers salary, and if the teacher quits within 6 months she has to pay it back.

Sorry, what about the actual Visa fee? I'm not paying a recruiter anything, but some of these aft. programs stipulate a repayment of the visa fee if you don't complete a contract. I'd just like to know if somebody knows how much this actual fee is so I can take a real amount to the negotitating table.

How much was that, if you don't mind sharing?

There are a few things they could be talking about. I (US citizen) had to pay like $40 (plus some traveling expenses) to get my Visa from the Korean Consulate in the States, so they might reimburse you some of that. Or it could be travel expenses plus visa fees for a Japan run. You need to ask the recruiter specifically (1) if there is a maximum amount, (2) what it's for, and (3) what papers you'll have to show them to get it. Trust me, if they're reimbursing travel expenses they'll want receipts.

This is not thru a recruiter. This is in the employment contract with the company. If I don't complete a contract, I'm assessed the visa fee that the company puts up. No reimbursement, I'm on the hook for it. Just curious as to what the fee is so they can't try to assess an arbitrary amount.

Why not ask them what they're talking about precisely and how much it is since it's in the contract i.e. "Hey, I've never heard of a 'visa fee' before. What is that? How much is it? Why is this clause in the contract? Can you include the exact fee in the contract, rather than just a vague statement?"

Maybe I'm paranoid, but with something like that, I'd want the amount listed. Otherwise, they could call everything a "Visa Fee." (Maybe not, but I'm sure there are some places that would try.)

This is a standard ploy by which the owner/director of a hogwan tries to 'trap' a naive newbie by contract. It's legally unenforcable... but most don't know that. When the 'boss' wants you to quit in the 11th month and is screaming/yelling/hair-pulling and generally making life hell, he'll demand W4,200,000 (or any other effin', arbitrary amount) for a 'visa fee' if you quit - knowing most will 'run' without their last month's pay, airfare, severance and pension (which, despite payroll deductions, has never been submitted to the NPS anyway). Rolling Eyes

You're NOT paranoid! Save yourself a lot of grief - avoid the employer and move on. If necessary, use another recruiter (or four).

I know I could just ask them to detail it in the contract and be done with it, I'd just like to know if this is an actual amount and if so, how much it is. I do appreciate the advice though.

It's highly unlikely they will 'detail' the amount in the contract. If you ask them to, they will just tell the recruiter to find them someone else.

I'm not dealing with a recruiter, nor have I ever. They've offered me a job and I'm trying to work out the fine print. I don't see why they wouldn't be willing to give me a number.
