Hi all,
While I have caught the "copy paste guy" AKA "mises" spreading hatred against one fourth of the population of this world through deceptively misquoting verses of Qur'an; I think it's good for everyone to read how does it look like when we go investigate the matter ourself.
Let's see:

Pretty bigoted cherry picking, hun?. Lets connect the verse with previous immediate verse:

(2:191) Fight against them wherever they confront you in combat and drive them out from where they drove you out. Though killing is bad. persecution is worse than killing Do not fight against them near the Masjid Haram unless they attack you there.
(2:192) And if they attack you first (even in that sacred area), strike them (without any hesitation); this is the due punishment for such disbelievers. If, however, they desist from fighting (you should also do likewise), and know that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful .

Caught the liar. Here is actual verse:

Thats totally wrong, you copy paste guy !!. The translation of verse 59 and 60 is NOT this.
Here is the actual translation with just the next verse:
(8:59) Let not the deniers of the truth be deluded that they will gain any advantage. Surely, they, can never overcome Us!
(8:60) Make ready for an encounter against them all the forces and well-readied horses you can muster that you may overawe the enemies of Allah and your own enemies and others besides them of whom you are unaware but of whom Allah is aware. Whatever you may spend in the cause of Allah shall be fully repaid to you, and you shall not be wronged.
(8:61) If they incline to peace, incline you as well to it, and trust in Allah. Surely He is All-Hearing. All-Knowing.

Did you read one previous verse too? Of course not. Here, let me help you:
(60:8) Allah does not forbid that you be kind and just to those who did not fight against you on account of religion, nor drove you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are equitable.
(60:9) Allah only forbids you to be friends with those who have fought against you on account of religion and who have driven you out of your homes and have abetted in your expulsion. And any who make friends with them, they are the wrong-doers.

Excuse me? How come you dropped the middle verses ? i.e. 255 and 256. It shows that you can twist anything for the sake of proving your stance right. Here, let me help you once again:
(2:254) O Believers, spend of the wealth We have bestowed upon you (in Our way) before the Day comes when there shall be no buying and no selling: when neither friendship nor intercession will be of any avail. Those, who adopt the way of disbelief are indeed the wrongdoers. '
(2:255) Allah: the Everlasting, the Sustainer of the whole Universe; there is no god but He. He does neither slumber nor sleep. Whatsoever is in the heavens and in the earth is His. Allah is the Helper and Protector of those who believe in Him: He brings them out of the depths of darkness into the light. As for the disbelievers, they have taghut as their patron, who drives them out of light into the depths of darkness. These are the people who are doomed to the Fire, wherein they shall live for ever.

OP, this is an excellent thread.
There are a lot of websites out there which cherry pick quotes from scriptures such as the muslim Koran (or the jewish Talmud or whathaveyou) and place them out of context in order to show Islam (or Judaism or whatever else) in the worst possible light. People should be aware of this and exercise a bit of critical thinking before they swallow the contents of these websites hook line and sinker. |

I think it is perfectly acceptable if a person does not agree to an ideology/scripture and wants to stand for what he believes, but maliciously misquoting other people's scriptures is not acceptable in any case. |

Only in the bizarro world of muslim apologists can directly quoting from one of the most violent and hateful books ever written in the history of the world be "spreading hatred". But such it is. Let me say this, if you think my quoting from your little book is hate, you have absolutely no idea what is coming. Over the past few years, I've watched more and more otherwise normal, passive and tolerant Occidentals become increasingly irate at the "religion of peace". If I were a "Western" muslim, I'd be spending my time trying to actually moderate the moderates, rather than worrying about Occidental perception.

# Don't let the disbelievers think they can escape. They are your enemy and the enemy of Allah. 8:59-60
# Exhort the believers to fight. They will win easily, because disbelievers are without intelligence. 8:65

# Those who disbelieve will never be pardoned by Allah. 47:34-35
# Those who think an evil thought concerning Allah will be cursed and sent to hell by him. 48:6
# Allah has prepared a flame for the disbelievers. 48:13
# If you refuse to fight for Allah, he will punish you with a painful doom. 48:16
# "Whoso turneth back, him will He punish with a painful doom." 48:17

# Allah will "cause it [Islam] to prevail over all religion." 48:28

# Don't bother to ask Allah to forgive the disbelievers. He will never forgive them. 63:6
# "Might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers." 63:8
# Those who disbelieve will have a painful doom. 64:5
# Those who disbelieve are the owners of the Fire. 64:10
# Be stern with disbelievers. They are going to Hell anyway. 66:9

| Aren't there plenty of analogous verses in the Bible? I doubt that a particular religion is what ills the Muslim world today. Judaism, Christianity, and Buddhism have all been adopted by repressive cultures over the centuries. Tibetan Buddhism was fairly horrifying well into the 20th century. Culture and politics are the foundation. Religion affects and is affected by them, but clearly both liberal and oppressive conditions can co-exist with the same holy book. |

While I agree with other posters about cherry-picking verses, I found your explanations (with further verses) didn't really sway me to thinking that the verse was inclined towards peace.
Basically, your quotes, while they may be more accurate, did not make me feel more kindly to the Qur'an. |

Please shut up from talking about Christianity here. This was not a topic of "Islam vs. Christianity".
About turning the other cheek, I think only hypocrites talk about turning the other cheek all the times. How do people stop the murderers? do they offer them more people to kill? Do you call that turning the other cheek?
Or how about stopping the rapists? Do you offer them your women as "the other cheek"?
Justice can never be achieved if you leave the criminal (/evil) elements of the society by saying you have to turn the other cheek. And if you indeed stop the violence and crimes through force or at least use force in defense then you will be a hypocrite in still accusing the people that they should always turn the other cheek in any case.

I understand your position when persons like me are very few and the people spewing hatred through misquoted scriptures are more (or at least more active).
You know human mind functions in a way we can somewhat simulate it scientifically in computers too. The algorithms for it require the data to be cycled through artificial neurons again and again. The more it repeats the cycles, the more the algorithm learns on the data. Sometimes excessive number of cycles cause the "over-learning" or "over-fitting" of data on algorithm.
The similar principle applies on human neurons too. The more number of times you repeat some information , people start to believe that knowledge with greater strength, regardless of the truth or falsity of that knowledge.
As Goebbelss said:
�If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.�
Now that might not justify everything about Qur'an from your point of view(as different people always have disagreements, the reason why some follow one religion and others follow other religions), but it explains that if you are reading some verses in context then you might not feel anything wrong with them , but still there will be opposite feeling in your sub-conscience because you had some over-learning from other resources in the past.
Furthermore, it is very very bitter for a person to watch his belief/stance getting shattered (in a sense he came to know he was wrong for a long time) so it is natural for people to oppose the reasons contrary to their belief. The same is the feeling which makes people resistant to the change (humans resist change, naturally).
I hope my explanation is not bad.

Well, not that we know, anyway. Unlike Muhammed, Jesus really isn't an historically verifiable figure, so we don't have a lot of biographical information about his life, apart from the Gospels, which record only select episodes from the last three years of his life. |

Well, you could throw the woman who has been raped in jail as in Saudi.. Or, you use the secular justice system to gather evidence and convict. The victim must 'turn the other cheek'. But if you think that's hypocritical, please turn in your passport. Turn the other cheek doesn't mean you roll over and dream of England, it means you don't seek an "eye for an eye". This is a cornerstone of civilized society, and your opposition to a central idea of civility surprises me none. Although not a Catholic, I'm sympathetic to the traditional Catholic view that sacred texts should be kept out of the hands of non-specialists. Unlike Protestants, I don't believe God is hovering around the shoulders of readers ensuring they correctly understand what is written. I think the huge variety of Protestant sects demonstrates my point adequately.
It goes double for people outside a religion when they try to read and interpret religious writings. |
