Hello,
I'm considering a job in the Gangnam area, near the subway. What are rents like around there? I know they're high, but what's average? Are there cheaper neighborhoods nearby?
I'm thinking Itaewon might be cheaper, but it's a 30-40 minute commute.
If you were working full-time in Gangnam, where would you live?

A 30-40 minute commute in Seoul is nothing to worry about, especially if where you work and where you live are relatively close to a subway entrance.
You'll get more for your money and wont' have to pay as much down in Itaewon. Kangnam will run you more, the traffic is bad 24/7, the pollution is nasty, and the pub scene can be described as over priced and cheesy at best. Bunch of posers and wannabes. Never understood the facination with Kang Nam. Stay north of the river and enjoy. |

I hear you about north of the river. I lived in Chongno for 4 years (1994-1998). I'm thinking of returning to Seoul, and am in the running for a good job in Kangnam. I'd rather not commute for 30-40 minutes each way, but that may turn out to be the way it goes. If I could find a funky older neighborhood near Kangnam, that would be nice, but as I recall, Kangnam is all newer houses, and rather upscale. |

| You LIVED in JONGRO? If you can live there, you can live anywhere. The only people I know who lived down there were looking transient. Good luck to you. |

Don't know about the transients, but Chongno was a great place to live. Cheap, very funky Korean neighborhood with lots of character (and characters!), old-style Korean houses set among narrow, twisting alleys, great places to eat, and a 10-minute walk to work. My favorite neighborhood in Seoul.
I'd like to find something like that again, but I don't think it exisits anywhere near Kangnam.
I hate commuting -- for a while I was commuting from Chongno to Yeoksam, which was 45 minutes door to door. I had to ride the subway at the height of rush hour, packed, overheated ... Uggh. Never again.
I never really checked out the neigborhoods south or west of Kangnam; I suspect it's all newer housing, quite pricey, and without the old-Seoul character. I never really liked Itaewon, didn't hang out there much, but it seems like the closest affordable area. Apparently there's a bus that goes from the Hamilton hotel to Gagnam station, and takes 30-35 minutes. Not great, but maybe that's the way it is.
Maybe I'll do the yogwan thing for a while and check out the Kangnam area. Who knows, maybe there's a cool, affordable pocket somewhere. Doubt it, but I'm not on the ground to check it out. |

I'm going to stick up for Gangnam here....I live near Seollung station and it's a great little area. You have the park next door, loads of restaurants, izakayas, coffee shops etc. It's all villas where I live and it has a really nice feel to it. One downside has been the lack of bars - all business bars to date and so you'd had to go up to Apku or Gangnam for "pubs". A recent opening of a Wa bar has helped a lot though.
Price-wise it's not too bad - depending on deposit obviously but as a guide 10m deposit will get you a nice big two bedroom villa and expect to pay 1.2m+ a month.
I love living here and wouldn't dream of moving anywhere else in Seoul. |

I'm with you. I live up Seollung road from you near Gangnam-gu Office station. I've lived in Sinchon and Gangnam but wouldn't move away from Gangnam.
Things are more expensive here but convenience is big for me. |

| Yeah i live in Daechi-dong near Solleung and i think it's a very nice area. You can get a pretty decent place for 10M key, and 600K monthly. |

| I prefer living north of the river, but as time's gone by I find my working locations gravitating towards Gangnam. What would a 50-60 mil deposit and a low rent (under 600k a month) get a couple with two cats down that way? |
