Quote:
The title of Master of Wine is like a Ph.D. for those working in the wine industry. The title has been awarded since 1953 by the Institute of Masters of Wine, and only 277 people worldwide have received the honorable title so far.

Now, a 40-year-old Korean woman, Jeannie Cho Lee, has become the first Asian to obtain the MW title.

...

Lee said she feels there are too many label drinkers in Korea, meaning people tend to care more about the brand than the quality of wine. It is pretty much the same in Hong Kong and China. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild of Bordeaux is the most popular brand in China. Its about 50 percent more expensive than other top class Bordeaux wines. The fact that red wine occupies 60 to 70 percent of the wine market in Korea, China and Hong Kong is also similar, she says.

She adds there is no reliable and credible wine expert in Korea. There is so much information on wine on the web, but I dont think its all that correct, she says. But she ended the interview on a hopeful note, saying, I believe Korea will very likely produce a wine expert who will be recognized globally as well as locally because Koreans are so passionate about what they are doing.

If only she could convince wine bar owners not to shoot themselves in the foot with markups of 300%.

I know for a fact that is incorrect. She may be the only Korean Master of Wine but there are at least two Masters of Wine in Asia last I heard both of whom work out of Hong Kong. I do believe they are Asian judging by their names. I learned about this through my work with some wine industry execs.

In four years I've noticed the selection of wine improve dramatically here. Korean plum wine is also something Koreans should try hard to market to the rest of the world, as I think it could really catch on.

Some things in Korea are great and are improving.

The availability of wine is improving..........maybe given time the prices will come down too......

But, at the moment the Korean wine scene is horrible. Elitist, trendy and purposefully expensive.

Buy your own at the supermarket and bring it to a galbi restaurant that doesn't have any and serve it yourself.

This winter in Thailand I was talking to a Dutch tourist about Korea. Of all the things she had the hardest time believing that a restaurant in Korea wouldn't have a corkscrew.

I purchased a lovely French wine at the Jell shop for about 6900 won a bottle. Very nice!!

Back in the day, Ken Kim had these wine tastings that were both fun and informative. Only 10,000 won per person. I miss those days.

I do this almost every night! Finish work, head down to the local samgyupsal place and crack open a bottle of red. Total cost about 15,000w. Bargain Laughing

That's a good idea.

I think I'll do that tonight (and bring my own seasoning).

Ha ha ha - I've been so tempted to bring my shaker of Montreal Steak Seasoning to a galbi restaurant and see how it tastes.

There are some great shops in Gangnam that sell premium wine. If you are a fan of good wines I could try to name a few of my favorites (I don't live in Gangnam so I'd have to find the business cards I kept).
I happen to be a fan of Doosan and their selection of premium wines.
I don't like the prices here in Korea. Moderately priced wines I enjoyed in Vancouver and California are expensive here. I also can't find my favorite brand of special white port. The last I checked they had stopped importing them altogether even though I was able to find it in shops when I first arrived in Korea.

Surprisingly, Emart has a decent selection. Although, I'm not convinced they know which wine is good and which is shit. I've seen some crap from back home that costs about $4 a bottle but at Emart it is about 18,000 won.

HOWEVER, since they really do not know what they are doing, you can find some really good wine from Spain, South America and even some decent stuff from Nappa Valley for a good price.
