Anyone ever seen this before?
I just came across it recently.

Is this teaching at it's best - how would you feel if it was your child?

I wonder if I could try something like this in one of my language classes LOL!

No matter if you believe yourself to be a "good" person or that you could never discriminate or harm your fellow man, you are wrong.

This, the Stanford Prison Experiment, the Stanley Milgram obedience experiment, and others show that anyone is capable of committing or being a co-conspirator in evil acts.

Adolf Eichmann comes to mind.

It's well worth a watch.

I think the stronger point of the experiments you mentioned is that power can truly be a corrupting thing (Stanford Prison Experiment) and that we tend to place too much faith and trust and well, fear, in authority figures (Milgram).
I remember watching a video of the Milgram experiment. Made my stomach turn.

I would if I remembered who he was Embarassed Let me google him and get back to you

Very interesting. So according to Wikipedia, he was taunted as a young boy for looking Jewish, and was largely responsible for the logistics of exterminating Jewish people, but all through his trial, he insists that he was only following orders?
I still believe that people can and do abuse their authority to gain control over others, but when you are largely responsible for killing about 6 million people, and if you were just following orders, as in This goes against my values, but I have to do it, it's my job," as he swore, wouldn't you crack after awhile, unless you truly believed that what you were doing was right?

See my reply above. I had never heard of this guy. Very complex issue you're dealing with! I needed to do some research! Smile

Unmasking Administrative Evil is a good book if you're actually interested in this.

Eichmann's trial in Israel was made into a documentary about this subject, it's really fascinating if you care to watch. It's amazing to see how even the judges get caught up in the administrative procedures and definitions as to basically dehumanize the victims of the holocaust. The judges themselves show the same traits that Eichmann showed, getting caught up in procedure and acronyms rather than focusing on the larger perspective.

He was captured by the Mossad in South America, drugged, and taken to Israel to stand trial for his role in the Holocaust.

The fascinating thing about Eichmann is that although he may have known what was happening he was claimed he merely made sure the "trains ran on time" and followed procedures.

It wasn't that he was following orders to kill jews, he was part of the administrative machine that facilitated the killings, just a functionary. He is used as an example for administrators who may be involved in "evil" projects but do not look at the grand picture.

This kind of stuff really interests me. Believe it or not while I was in university I was a graduate minor in Ethics, receiving the only A the professor had given during his entire career of teaching. No shit, I thought I was failing his class as I was one of those annoying people who argued with him all the time.

Can you imagine, shit baby, I love ethics.

Mrs. Elliot is one smart cookie.

You notice how she handled those Prison Gaurds in the last 2 clips?

An amazing teacher IMO.

Damn, she was one tough woman, eh? It's so amazing what she had to say in her interview on the Frontline webpage. It truly boggles my mind that *adults* could be swayed by the message that brown-eyed people are better than blue-eyed people (or vice versa.) But then, they are dealing with an authority figure, they are being fed self-affirming language about themselves, and they don't want to be the only one to say anything contrary to the current popular opinion.
Very interesting.

actually the power of propaganda and peer pressure is amazing, almost hypnotic. Ever been to a political party convention? Skilled politicans can get you eating out of their hands and you don't even know it. A couple of times you have to pinch yourself and say hey, these are the bad guys.

I know, but to me what is so amazing is that we believe that adults, for the most part, know who they are and what is right and what is wrong, and ths video just blows that idea to bits.
I am well aware of the cult of personality. It's amazing how seeminly fundamentally easy it is to push a crowd's buttons: make them feel special, make them feel more knowledgeable, provide a scapegoat for their problems, and voila, you have control over a crowd.

I was most shocked at the hate she recieved from some whites, and I noticed it was mostly males too.

Well, being a waeguk in Korea has been enlightening for me in the same way. I'll never see racism the same way again.

Divide them by skin color...darker on one side, lighter on the other.
