So I got a call from my recruiter today. Being naive, I thought maybe it was to give me the Visa issuance number I've been waiting a month for. Boy, was I wrong.
Turns out, the school that hired me had a minor infraction years ago for hiring a teacher on the wrong type of visa. It was apparently resolved years ago with a fine. They were given the OK to hire foreign teachers again years ago.
Then, in the middle of processing, a new guy showed up in immigration and decided to cancel the processing on all of our visas (myself and the other three teachers for that school), and he's just been holding on to our documents for the past ten days.
On top of this, they're also claiming that I don't have a degree, because the university doesn't issue degrees after the fall semester, so I have a document stating that I have completed my degree and the actual document will be issued in June.
...I sold my car, spend hundreds of dollars on documents and postage, and quit my job. I have a packed suitcase sitting next to my bed. If the immigration guy doesn't decide whether he's going to issue the visa issuance numbers or not by tomorrow, I lose the job.

No Kidding.
The best part is how I just found out about it today... BCM assured my recruiter that they had emailed me about the situation. I've never had any contact with them. |

Regardless of the school, your degree is the constant here. You will need this for any school. I wouldn't take my chances with the Korean system to accept loopholes around the actual degree.
I would wait until June, make sure the university has sent it, and then send it immediately to your recruiter or school so they can take it to immigration.
Consider this a relief. Don't work with the school, find another, and make sure all your documents are in.
Until then, get another job at home and wait for it to be done right. Koreans don't like it when we foreigners do shortcuts. They don't have it written down in their books, so they won't accept what you did. They don't use common sense when it's staring them in the face. |

You will need your diploma, not a letter verifying that you graduated, for Korean Immigration. That's their policy.
I worked for the hagwon chain you mentioned. It may be a blessing in disguise. There are better jobs in Korea.
You will likely have to submit more documents for another job. You might want to think about changing recruiters, too. March is when many public schools in Korea hire new teachers. You might want to think about that. In the meantime, you might want to do some internet research and find where you could go and teach English in the meantime until your diploma situation is rectified. Good luck. |
