These VoIP conference rooms are excellent for just about any type of communication online but especially if you do or want to do online teaching. I've been using mine for live, online training for several years.
Features include:
talk, text chat, listen, record (in MP3), co-browsing (they see whatever you browse to), whiteboard, screen casting (AKA: desktop sharing) and several other cool features.
Anything you can see on your desktop can be seen by anybody else in the room, including websites, PDFs, PowerPoints, or photos from your hard disk (for show and tell).
Plus, if you have a digital pen (e.g. Bamboo/Wacom makes one) you can do markup on anything you're looking at as well as 'save' it for later reference. The quality of all the features is excellent and the platform is very stable.
It does have a webcam although it's not as big nor is it 'constant on' like Skype.
You can get information and/or a free 3 person room to try out, fully featured, at http://wanderingsalsero.vereconference.com.
Prices are month to month and vary by capacity of room.
I have and use a 15 person room and I'm doing 'open house' tonight(Monday) and tomorrow(Tuesday), Korea time, from 10:00 - 11:00 pm. You're invited if you'd like to see the room in action.
Log in using your name as "ID" and the word "guest" as PW. You'll see me in there at "Art Williams" (me real name).
See you there!

It seems like stuff I already know hot to do with my computer using Linux (and just as doable with windows but possibly not for free) but I can imagine there are a lot of people who don't know how to set this stuff up on whichever platform they use.
The thing is, how many teachers are going to use a product like this and at what price. Perhaps I am wrong in imagining that only teachers use the forum here though. At least people will know this kind of thing is available. |

Hi Golem:
Well, I appreciate your opinion but, as you said,'It seems....'.
Using the word 'seems' tells me that you haven't seen it yet. All I'm suggesting, for your or anybody, is that it's really cool. I'm no web dummy either, at least in some areas......and I've never seen anything as functional and easy.
When you were referring to the average forum member, here........no, I think it's safe to say they're not actual teachers in the traditional, certified meaning of the word. There's nothing wrong with that.
And it's really kinda irrelevant because people are pretty much the same. Some people are just naturally curious and some aren't. I'm one of those who is. I'll poke my nose into anything that even might possibly be useful.
What really is a shame is that I've mentioned this thing to some of my Korean co-teachers and it just goes almost completey over their ahead. They're so busy being busy that they don't even have time to pay attention. "Thinkers' or 'entrepreneurs'......I don't think barely any of them really are. I'm tempted to categorize it as a Korean traint but I think it applies to people in general.
I'll tell you though......I think that with the economy the way it's going from bad to worse, you're going to see, maybe not next week....but eventually....a wide variety of new approaches tried in an effort to increase the effeciency and lower the cost of teaching.
And there's really no rational reason why more teaching can't or shouldn't be done online. And the VoIP conference room is one such too. As you may know, there are several other such tools that are right nowl being very effectively utilized by other institutions and enterprises.
Nobody came to my 'open house' tonight but I promised the kids I'd be here Monday and Tuesday night so I'll be back tomorrow evening. If you want to, you can still log in and check it out.
I'm not looking at it right now but I was wondering if I maybe forgot to put the URL in the post, here in Daves. If not....it's:
http://atw4.vereconference.com
Login ID: your name
Login PW: 'guest'
I also will mention that I showed this thing to another 'teacher' I know and he was blown away.
Regards,
