OK, so here's our story, briefly. My husband and I arrived at our apartment, which was great, but completely empty. We need to buy our major appliances. I thought the school would have them delivered, but I was asked this morning if I had bought my washer (I was told I would be reimbursed).
I need to confirm, but I think we are being given carte blanche to go buy our appliances and dishes and the like and get reimbursed. The trouble is, I have no idea where to go, and the guy that speaks the best English at my school is too busy to sit down and help me figure this stuff out. So, once I confirm that we will get paid, can someone here please tell me some places to go and help me find them (i.e., subway stops and directions).
What I need: TV, washer, refrigerator, dishes, pots and pans, cutlery and possibly a microwave. We also need a bed, a wardrobe, and will buy ourselves some miscellaneous furniture four our apartment.
My husband and I plan to buy an oven for ourselves, and I was wondering if Korea has microwaves that are also convection ovens?
ALL info you can provide would be great-especially subway exit numbers and walking directions. We live a Hyewha station and need to have all of these things delivered asap, especially the washer and refrigerator.
Thanks in advance. |

I don't know about the places in your area (you didn't say) to buy appliances, but the best places to buy pots/pans, dishes, cutlery, etc. is at your local market area in the small mom/pop type "home" stores. You'll pay big bucks for them at places like Emart. However, perhaps this doesn't matter since you'll be reimbursed.. but if you have a limit on how much you can spend.. you could get more for your money at a market area.. Guess you'll have to ask folks where the appliance stores and markets are, though..Good luck! |

Double check on if the school will reimburse you! Because I have visions of you paying a couple million won for furniture and then a month later they hand you an envelope with 300,000 saying that is your housing allowance and whoops you should have bought second hand.
Most big markets like Emart and HiMart will deliver your appliance if you buy one.
If you want cheap white goods (aka fridge, stove, etc) look around your towns market areas for a used goods store.
Good Luck |

You can get most of that stuff at any Emart or HomePlus. I wouldn't recommend shopping for furniture there, but any appliances (including the big ones) you can probably get at an Emart or HomePlus. I have no idea what their prices are like compared to other stores though, as I've never had to buy any of that stuff. But at the very least, you could get all of your pots and pans and cutlery there. I recommend at least taking a look.
Get in a taxi and say "Ka-ga-oon E-mart-uh Kah-joo-say-oh" (It means "please go to the closest Emart") They are literally everywhere so I doubt it will be an expensive taxi ride. |

Since no one at my school lives in my area (Hyewha station is our stop) none of them know where we should go grocery shopping. The closest Lottemart I could find is Seoul station. If anyone knows of a closer Emart/Home Plus/Carrefore (spelling-never been there) or similar places, please add these to the list. The local market doesn't even have forks, never mind cheese, which I love to much too live without, even though it is more expensive then last time I was here. I never lived in Seoul, so I am clueless about shopping in Seoul. Refika, I don't kow what our budget is either, but I woul love all the info I can get!

don't go to supermarkets. They're more expensive and have crappy service. Hi-mart will be cheaper and do free delivery and installation by guys who know what they're doing. |
