I wonder what would happen if Japan or the US really did shoot down a satellite launched by N.K.

According to some people on these boards, North Korea is merely misunderstood. The United States is the real problem here. Right... Rolling Eyes

I've never really seen that Guri. Seems DPRK is one of the only areas with near total agreement.

Yeah, I'm confused. Who has defended North Korea here?

Give them a chance, gentlemen. If we must choose between supporting the North Korean govt or the American govt in an internet debate, especially on this forum, are you so sure that at least some will not switch to "the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend" autopilot mode, reread their B. Cumings, and embrace antiAmerican-style Pyongyang apologia...?

By the way, on an unrelated topic, it has been a long time since we have heard from SovietMan, no? Anyone seen him around?

It's a bit weak, though, claiming an alleged trend based on one guy with pretty idiosyncratic views.

If the USA decided to launch an Iraq-style attack on NK, you probably would see a lot of posters, myself included, criticizing that move. Apart from that, I don't know of too many instances of people defending North Korea on its own merits. The general gist of the debate tends to be between two camps...

-North Korea sucks, but if the South Koreans can't see that, why does the US bother protecting them?

-North Korea sucks, and poses a threat to world peace and/or US interests. Therefore, the US is acting on rational motivations by keeping troops here.

SovietMan was last seen defending racial attacks in his motherland over on the Travel Forum.

No. North Korea threatens America and its allies' (namely, Japan, and whether they know it or not, South Korea's) security and interests. It remains in America's security and interests to keep Japan and South Korea as they are in East-Asian affairs and more generally the world economy. Therefore we maintain American forces there as a deterrent against Pyongyang.

It is not rocket-science.

By the way, who has alleged "a trend?" Kuros asked for a name and I gave one. The only weak thing I see here, On the Other Hand, is yet another instance of nitpickers refusing to grant each other latitude or even concede that, whichever part of those comments one choses to emphasize or to interpret this way or that, we basically agree.

And this notwithstanding, people's tendency to side against America in this or that world-affairs event as a matter of principle is hardly an imagined one at Dave's ESL Cafe. And finally one rarely sees posters carefully considering place X, Y, or Z on its own merits -- conversation usually gravitates around, simplistically and one-sidedly, what the Great Satan has done to others or how no matter what the Great Satan has done, we can at least denounce its motives as impure and therefore suspect and worthy of our contempt, etc., etc., etc., until the end of time...

I'm guessing GuriGuy is referring to Itaewonguy's defence of the DPRK here - http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=149568&start=30

Robot says South Korea should had sent the warbots across the DMZ long ago and reclaimed North Korea to make one Korea since it's all the same land, people, and culture. Since the 2 Koreas are the same ethnic group, same language, and same culture, given they're 55 years apart due to the North being opressed, the old Korea still exists even though you don't see today in the South. I believe if the Norths government regime were over thrown, the 2 could be brought togethor and both parts would benefit. The North and South Korean people themselves don't hate each other and many are actually related to each other where families were split up during the Korean war and ended up on opposite sides of the DMZ.

I don't understand why no one hasn't went up to kick that regimes ass and give those poor people what they deserve. A bit of freedom, reuniting with their long time lost relatives in the South, and economic opportunity like the South have. If I were South Korea, I would not tolerate my other half taunting me with threats, I'd go make love with them by force instead.

When the other half has a bigger army, has hundreds of artillery and missiles pointed at Seoul and has nuclear weapons ...
you don't go to war with them.

Robot logic 101..or should that be 1010101010101 Wink
