|
|
Hi, My gf and I are going to Korea in a few months. She has a job already lined up in a public school that has agreed to let us live together and to pay our rent. I curently live in Toronto and teach ESL over the internet as a job. I want to keep my online ESL job when i go to Korea but i recently found out that my employer is might be bending the law because he hired me without a degree and I teach Korean students. I have been teaching at this company part time for over a year and would like to keep the job for part time income while in Korea. Is this a bad idea? Any advice?
Thanks in advance.
additional info:
its an informal conversation class
I plan to stay in Korea for 1 year
I don't need a work visa because the job is canadian |

You work for s-English!
Tell me something...if you decided to go on vacation for a week in, say... St. Thomas, you'd be outside of Canada, right? Let's say you take your laptop with you and you're available and take calls for your entire time allocation, then go sift sand and watch the sun go down.
You do not have a Korean teaching visa, correct? I don't even know where s-English is based.
If you were to, say, come here with your girlfriend and start privates out of your local church (with kickbacks to the pastor, of course), outside the terms of your Guest Visa (F3?) then I would report you to immi myself for being stupid.
But right now you work in your home country - Canada. Just because you are physically present in another country doesn't mean you're not effectively still doing your work in the Canada bubble. When immigration asks you the question "Are you coming here to work?" You can say, truthfully, no. You will continue to do work while you're here, the same way a businessman checking out a shipment at Hanjin checks his email from his laptop, but you are not coming here to work.
Immi having a problem with that would be an awfully big stretch. |

yea, that makes sense. i guess the only problem then is the fact that i don't have a degree. Shouldn't my employer only hire people with a degree? I'm starting to think my employer might be sketchy and i don't want to get in any trouble. |

I think you should carry on doing the job for which you were hired in Canada, continue to have your salary deposited in CAD, continue to maintain normal relations with your employer, and not tell a soul. You don't work in Korea, you work in Canada. Even if you move to Korea, you still work in Canada. |

Yea, thats probably what I will do. The only thing is i don't want to lie to immigration. Like if Korea asks me how im getting money or something... i dunno, i guess i'll think about it. Thanks for the advice though. |

Tell them you have a job back in Canada. You're here with your girlfriend. That's the truth. |

true, but will they not ask me what exactly my job is? Might they ask to see my qualifications for that job? Maybe im being paranoid but i don't want to get turned back once in korea.
p.s. Sorry about all the questions but just one more:
As a canadian i can stay 6 months in korea with a tourist visa but then i have to go on a visa run to Japan for more time. I want to stay for a year. Will they let me keep renewing it for that ammount of time? |

I hadn't considered that, because as an American, our tourist visas are limited to 3 months. It's my understanding that your 6 month visa is renewable as many times as they allow it. Since you don't work in Korea, you're not going to be doing anything except turning up at the airport and requesting a visa. Before your six months is up, head down to Busan with the girl, take a lil trip on the Beetle, have some lunch, then head back on the late ferry. She'll walk in with her E-2 or E-1, and you'll request another tourist visa.
Should they ask you what your business is, you can tell them that you provide telephone support for an online company. This is true. They may ask you which company. Since s-English is not based in Korea (to my knowledge), just tell the truth.
Take this for example. Say you work for HSBC. Yes, I understand, Mr. Immigration Officer, that there is a HSBC of Korea, but I don't work for them, I don't know who they are. I'm just the phone support guy. Calls come in, I answer, log a ticket, calls go out. Their checks come from HSBC Canada, they go to my account in Canada. I don't work in Korea. I don't even work for a Korean company.
Odds-on, they're not going to ask. They're going to be like "why do you want to stay in Korea for another year?" and you'll be like "see that hot chick standing over there? Well, the frumpy broad with the maple leaf patch standing next to her is my girlfriend, and I like to have regular sex with my girlfriend, and I can't do that from Canada. She's here for a year, so I'm here for a year."
All 100% true, all 100% legal. |

Might have had my head up my ass there for a minute... You really ought to make sure that the company you're working for is not based in Korea. If it is, you might be sketchy with immi. |
