I've recently been offered a job w/ Chung Dahm Learning through Aclipse Recruiting. Does anyone know anything about these companies or have any advice that would be helpful?

I was offered the same, they want my application by Friday.
I've been suggested to try out public school jobs first though, so I'm looking into them. Good luck! |

There are HUNDREDS of Chungdahm threads on this board. I would be happy to answer a specific question for you but the information you want is available in countless threads here. Try using the search bar, its not hard!

OK, I guess I should have been more specific. I have looked into the school, it looks good to me. What I would like to know is if anyone has had any experience with the school or recruiting agency, what their opinion is of it. Thanks for pointing out the generality of my statement though. |

| Are you willing to work hard, take criticism, be monitored (literarly), follow strict company policies and guidelines, have virtually no vacation or holidays (except twice a year), willing to work on saturdays, don't party, don't travel, and serious about teaching, sure CDI would be a good place to work and the pay is good. Otherwise, I'd look somewhere else. |

Search for CDI. We had two long threads about Chung Dahm active like three days ago. No offense, but it sounds like you've heard little about this school. Keep in mind that Dave's tends to be negative in general.
CDI is not a school, it's seventy schools. They are divided into branches and franchises.
Franchises are very small (like 5 teachers each) numerous (there are over 60 spread across the country) and the appearance of the teachers is a big factor with many of them. Not necessarily gorgeous, just normal by Korean standards. Their styles vary greatly, depending on the direction of their owners. They are like mom and pop academies who outsource to CDI for materials and training.
Branches are much larger (30 - 80 teachers each) and all 7 branches are located in Seoul. They are most interested in the popularity of one's college of university. CDI rates all accredited colleges and universities and gives the graduates those scores. Having a masters is a big plus. Appearance, type of degree, GPA, experience, etc. don't matter as much.
I've been with CDI for about 7 months now. I am lucky. I LOVE my job at the Bundang branch. The more I hear about the other locations, the more I think I'm at the best one. I discovered CDI through Aclipse too. I discovered Aclipse through the Peace Corps. Also, I have a good friend that really likes his franchise in northwest Seoul. I've heard good things about a few branches. I've heard bad things about a few, too.
Branch teachers usually work hourly (27 - 40 000 won per hour for 24 hours). They are nice because one can transfer from one to another in between terms, rather than waiting a year. There may be stress on being standard (depending on if management follows the script or watches ur back), which can be frustrating when the standard way doesn't work well.
Franchise teachers almost always work monthly and work 32 hours a week at least. Franchises can be much more lax and give more freedom, but they are considered to be substandard by the management in the branches.
In general, there is no vacation or perks. I don't miss them. My husband and I are considering taking a three month break after our first contract ends. |

April 6, good info, thanks. So I'm starting at a Seoul branch soon. I see that you cited the hourly contract range. Are you aware of what branch teachers are averaging? Or were you implying 24 per week?
Also, if teacher start dates are rolling, why the need to take off one term? I thought I saw another CDI teacher mention that elsewhere. Hope you get this since I cannot IM. Thanks! |
