A lot of foreigners here (men and women) over estimate the feeling of safety, but on the other hand it is often the fear of crime that ruins lives rather than an actual incident (barring that actually happening).

It is sad to read about women having to self police. That may seem like a sensible thing to do but it places more responsibility for attacks onto them.

If (some) men are the problem then it is men who should have to monitor themselves and be curfewed Smile

It's not legal to carry it in Korea. It was only last month (2 months ago?) a Korean man was arrested for selling it online.

I can't recall hearing anything about self defense classes in Korea, either.

That's because defending yourself will get your ass thrown in jail and/or put in the poor house because you have to pay millions in blood money, regardless of what your attacker was doing to you.

(Taking an age to let me edit my post so am adding twpo more things I thought of in a new post).

I live in a small village and have been known to walk along the main (only) street in the wee hours. Even if I taxi in from somewhere else I may do this if I need to pick up something at the convenience store.

Several times I have had cars stop as I am walking, though they usually drive off once they see I am foreign! Spooky.

Second point - on the rogue taxi drivers at the airports. I despise them. They look and act like thugs. I was caught out once when a holiday flight from Japan was delayed and I had no choice but to use a taxi home. (I lived in Seoul at that time). Total rip off and the cheely bloke even asled for a tip. (I was tempted to say 'your tip is to get a conscience!).

BUT I didn't relaise at the time that the airport staff would have called me a regular taxi. Recently I was delayed after a domestic flight, (yes I am a jinx) and the rogue guy was asking for 100.000 to my place. (Plus whatever else he decided to add at the end, as they do). Despite his harassment I chose to get the airline staff to dial for a taxi. They then told me I should 'wait inside the building for my own safety'.

He continued to harass me, the airport staff and the regular taxi driver but nothing physical. Total fare with tolls was under 60.000.

Huh? Are you saying something bad about Korean women?

No way. I would've jumped at the chance to have ridden in a car full of Korean women. But men? No. But I think there are probably other English teachers on here who have met the same chick I'm talking about and I'm curious to know how it all went down.

Okay. I still don't know what you're talking about, but at least you're not trying to make fun of a serious issue- personal safety.

Someone posted some stats on here before that showed South Korea had one of the highest rates of attacks against women in the world. If that is true, then they have good reason to exercise caution.

carrying pepper spray is NOT illegal in korea. that man was arrested for selling pepper spray imported from the u.s. that allows the sprayer to spray continuously.

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/12/117_37015.html

"Seven-hundred and seventy cans of pepper spray made in the United States were sold through an online auction site here. They look like ordinary pepper spray but used compressed air, classifying them as gas guns requiring police authorization for possession and trade. They can spray pepper up to three meters until their contents are depleted.

Pepper sprays made in Korea use a pump to bypass rules requiring authorization ― spraying occurs in limited amounts with the touch of a button. "

i did a search on naver and came up with this site:
http://www.bb.co.kr/main/pd/pd_list.php?auc_model=&cid=170350010&cate_qry=%BD%BA%C7%C1%B7%B9%C0%CC&src=naver_ccs&kw=002234

better safe than sorry.

I was in a club once where a can of bear spray somehow was broken, completely sprayed, or something else. Some people had collapsed on the ground and were vomiting. 2 people had to be taken to hospital. The entire club had to be shut down for the night. Even though it had been sprayed at least 10 meters away from me, I didn't realize it until I got a little closer as I was walking in that direction. The smell was awful, I saw people running towards me so I ducked into the bathroom and got some wet tissues to cover my face and then headed for an exit. There were a couple guys in the bathroom throwing up on the floor.

I was at a Slayer concert in '88 when someone let loose with some of that stuff during the song 'Chemical Warfare'. People were dropping left and right, clutched up in the fetal position. The guys I was with managed to detect it early enough to avoid getting a lungful, so we were able to bail out.

Another reason to have a car. Avoid taxi drivers, who for the most part are scumbags.

Goddamn foreign teachers are at it again! ... no, wait...

Ah, you beat me to it.

Somehow, this is going to come back full circle on the foreigners, though. . . or, at least the Japanese. Smile

Women should be careful in clubs, people have been drugged.

A Box of Chocolates; You say you have never seen a self defense class in korea? What part of Korea do you live in? thee is a martial arts school on every street in Korea! Feminism will not help you if you have a knife at your throat or are being beaten. The lack of feminist indoctrination is not the cause of these women being assaulted. Who are you angry at? Pepper spray is a good idea

But they're not advertised as self-defense classes. They're also generally not for women.
