I'm debating right now whether to return to the Land of the Morning Calm and am wondering what the general climate is given the recession. I haven't really paid attention to the board since I left so is there a general consensus or anything new I should be aware of? I left in 9/07, has much changed since then?
Any info or links to previous threads that might have covered this would be appreciated.

There're still jobs. Come on back to your home away from home. Only thing that's changed is the won is very weak so pay is only about 2/3rds of what it was up until last October according to historical financial data. |

So the pay is actually down or I'll only see the reduction when I go to transfer money home? For instance, if I was making 2.0 mil in '07 will I only be making 1.5 now or still the same (approx)?

You can easily make 2.3 to 2.5 these days.
The Korean won has fallen to about 1500/dollar. It was below 1000/dollar range when you left.
You will now need all kinds of additional documents to work here: a Criminal Background check and a health check up in Korea.
The Korean economy is way down and falling. Many schools are losing students and cutting back.
There has been a recent influx of resumes from unemployed financial and legal workers to teach here. |

I did a background check at the beginning of my last contract so that's no big deal. Would I be getting a health check up here and submitting the results or is it from a doc in Korea? I read a little bit about the AIDS scare they're drumming up about foreigners but I didn't read the full thread to see what the final verdict was. It's been finalized, then?

you have to fill out a health statement in the US then when you get to Korea you have a health check. This is required to get your ARC. It seems like they're concerned with AIDs and tuberculosis (TB). If you're free of those you're good to go. |
