Seriously... I'm not anti-Itaewon- in fact I like hanging out there- but
it seems like all apartments I find for rent, on all the English-speaking websites I know, are in Itaewon. Is this because Seoul realtors think foreigners only want to live where foreign people are more common??

It's maddening. My work commute sucks from Itaewon... I cannot find my own reasonably priced place.

Have you stopped by any Budongsan's near your work and asked what they have to rent?

Probably because it's mostly foreigners who are interested in renting places rather than depositing key money.

The agencies you mentioned probably specialize in housing for foreigners, which tends to be around the Itaewon area.
If you wish to find something outside of that area, there are thousands of budongsan (real estate agencies) in the city. Pick one nearby the area you'd like to live and see what they have available. This process is made easier, however, with a Korean speaker present, but can be done without one too.

It's funny how Korean have a bad image of Iteawon. It may be sleazy but it's nothing compaired to Pattaya.

I had to find my own place in Daechi-Dong. I had a kyopo friend help me, but I managed to find some real estate agents who could speak passable English anyway. There are so many budongsans around, there's bound to be someone who can speak English. Trial and error is your best bet. If you post the region you're interested in, maybe someone can help you.

OP, go to the neighborhood you want to live in and go to all the budongsans with a Korean. Or write down the numbers and have a Korean call later.

It's a manifestation of racism. It's sleazy because it has foreigners. Because Koreans are never sleazy. Rolling Eyes

There are also lots of nice restaurants if you bother to look. Yeah, it can be sleazy, but so can pretty much every neighborhood in Seoul. Take Yeouido for example: a clean, modern office area with lots of oblesik-like highrises. But there are also lots of "business clubs" where prostitution takes place. Sometimes they even have women hand out cards to these places with bikini-clad women on the back, right in the middle of major intersections at lunch time.

Most every neighborhood is like this; Itaewon isn't a special case.

I agree completely, i wasnt saying that it was an exception or anything. What i was trying to address to micheallambing is that its not necessarly just koreans perception of the area and the foreigners there because it can be sleazy thats a matter of fact. Iv seen some of the korean red light districts and there much more sleazy, and i dont think they would disagree just because its a korean frequented area.

OP, as mentioned, you just have to visit several (not just one) rental business in the area where you want to live. Despite fibbing through their teeth, and checking on the computer, the different 부동산 agencies often don't share the better apartments with others, because they hope to keep all of the commission for themselves. That's why you need to go to every agency in an area to find out if there is anything or not. Can't tell you how many times we were told, "There's nothing here -- we checked the computer" or, "All we have is this..." only to find the guy across the street had something better.

Footwork is the best way to find a great place. The korean internet sites are pretty much worthless, other than for locating specific realtors and apartments in areas, and are seeded with fake rentals to draw you to their agency. You'll find the good places for rent are non-existent, or magically were rented that morning, etc.

Just do the footwork.
