No. E-2 is a work visa. You can cancel it, but then you have to leave Korea.

I heard that SA's can get an extention on their work visa for tourist purposes.

Is that true?

Does it apply to Americans?

I don't know what an "SA" is; however, an E-2 visa can be extended for non-work purposes (for up to 30 days) until the date of your ticket leaving K-land.

Would I have to go to immigration, or can I do that online?

Also... how far in advance do I have to do it? My stinking school won't give me even a few hours off to get down to immigration.

You can do it online here http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/CvlapplInfoDetailR_en.pt?cvlapplCd=12700000095&locale=en&cvlapplGbSeq=
Allow at least three working days to be on the 'safe side'.
