until the last person has left - did anyone know this?

I went this afternoon and there was a paper over the machine - no more numbers to be given out - they told me after all the people w/numbers were called, then they'd take everyone else and no, the staff couldn't leave until everyone had gone.

I waited because my visa expires on monday and I needed an extension.

she said her job was "a bad job" and you know what? I agreed with her.

I've often disagreed w/decisions and policies of immi but sometimes we have to remember the people who work there have a lot to deal with. I'd hate to have to stay at my job and continue working until no more people came thru the door!!!

how sucky is that???

anyway - it was after 7 pm when I left so if you need to go sometime and are worried about them still being open (in Seoul anyway) just go there anyway -

cheers
Very Happy

This is normal for government offices. As long as you're there in time to get a number, they serve you. If they didn't, people could go there everyday, get a number, and NEVER be serviced.

no - they turned off the number machine - and the immi officer I spoke to said sometimes they turn it back on, sometimes the supervisor just comes out and lines up the extra people that are waiting - I was among them today.

anyway - you make it sound like people on this forum are all familiar with K govt offices - uh huh - well, we're not - and this is only a simple thread to provide info that might be helpful, ok?

thanks for understanding.

actually that's really nice to know. If your boss is being a pain, and won't let you off til the end of your contract time (even if you have something urgent, like your visa expiring!) then you know you just have to make it there before the official closing time to be served.

By the way I've also noticed that they suddenly become more efficient around 5pm Smile

Yes, sometimes the best time to go to a government office is at the very last minute where they try to deal with your issue as fast as they can.

I went to immi once to get an exit order at the last minute. They weren't taking anymore numbers (like moosejaw), and I just lingered around and snuck in and they took care of me right quick.

I said "as long as you get a number"... I understand they turn off the number machine.

This is similar to other places in Asia. As long as you get a number, you will be serviced. Isn't my saying this being helpful?

I had no idea.

My local office - a small, branch who's 'parent' office is in another city - has been extremely good to me. I've been many times (contract renewal, multiple entry, change of address, new passport etc.) and they're always courteous and efficient... but, I attend with the application(s) already 'filled out' and all the required documents. I'm sure it helps that they now know me by name... and that I've taught some of their children. Cool

I agree that Immi officers have a lot to deal with and have an unenviable job - I've seen people literally screaming at them.

For all the inconsistancies one reads about on 'Dave's', remember... you're not in Kansas anymore; and, ask yourself this question -
If the situation were reversed, would the Immi officer (back home) be able to communicate with the foreigner in Korean? Shocked

I seriously doubt it considering no one outside this country speaks the language.

English, on the other hand, is widely spoken and considered the global language - or haven't you heard?

I would believe however, there would be interpreters for various other languages such as Spanish and perhaps Mandarin or French, depending on area of the country (in U.S. that is)

... But they could probably find someone who could speak to them in Chinese, Spanish, French or Russian Smile

Not in Canada... no Immi officer speaks anything even remotely resembling French. Wink
