My kid is starting Gum-do lessons next week at school, and she needs a uniform and sword. The Koreans aren't giving me any information on what is required because they say there is only one type of uniform (black) and sword (wooden). When I looked aroiund the sporting goods dept. of Homeplus, I saw several different types of wooden swords.

Can any Gum-do masters help me out?

The school shoulc let you buy a uniform. I am a teacher here. Uniforms are about 50,000 and one is enough. There are two types of swords. Both wood.

As your son gets a higher lvl he can buy a real sword if you choose. SOme schools alow students to use them others dont.

The Gumdo master should help with the materials, at my dojang, we jsut ordered our swords and uniforms on our first day. They usually have a bunch of extra practice wooden swords around that the kids may be able to use those for the first little bit.

Not sure if that helps, but I know that is the way at a few of the places.

I have studied Gumdo a little bit. Here's what I know.

There are two 'styles' of Gumdo in Korea. One is DaeHan Gumdo and the other is HaeDong Gumdo.

DaeHan requires the bamboo sword. Eventually it will also require armor as you progress to higher levels for sparring. The sword is cheap. The armor is some pretty cool stuff and will run around 300,000-500,000 won. The armor consists of a helmet and shielded face, a breast plate, and two gauntlets.

HaeDong Gumdo is more about the forms. They don't really do sparring and usually use the solid wooden sword. Since they don't do sparring, you don't need the armor. The solid sword is also cheap.

As for the uniforms, usually you buy them from the school. The school usually has a special style, color, and even decorations on their uniforms that identifies their gym. When I was doing Gumdo, the Master took my measurements, I paid him some money, and about two days later my stuff arrived.

It shouldn't be a very complicated process.

I was in a bit of a rush since the kid's homeroom teacher was demanding that all students have their equipment before having met the instructor. I will find out shortly whether we have the right equipment.
