After finally being bounced around from city to city, I have finally got a public school that I'm starting April 1st in Suwon. I am looking for anybody in or around Suwon so I wont be too lonely. I will be living around the Suwon station. So if anybody can tell me about that area, or lives around that let me know. It would be nice to know some people before I make it over in April.

I think the best thing to know about Suwon is that it is connected
to the Seoul subway system so you can leave often for long periods
of time.

No, it is quite nice actually. There are quite a few foreigners in Yeongtong and Ingadong on the weekends at the Crazy Duck or the Now bar.

People who cannot seperate themselves from Itaewon and Hongdae will not like it because they are about an hour away. So it's hard to get back late at night without dropping 30k on a taxi.

Suwon is what you make it to be. If you want Mexican food about 30 minutes by subway away is the best place in Korea at Songtan where they employ Mexican chefs. There is an Indian place, a Turkish resteraunt and some great kalbi at Suwon Station. There are movie theaters, Home Plus stores, and other large city sort of things to do.

Basically, if you want to part in Seoul every night you won't like Suwon. If you can live without it or do it on the weekends then you're fine. There are other options but nothing replaces Hongdae or Itaewon for certain things.

I currently live in the Suwon station area.

My view is, that it is probably the busiest and most happening place in Gyeonggi-Do, and is the same or better (based on amenities, nightlife, and just general action) than 90% of Seoul. Suwon station is definitly the best place in Suwon for a teacher in their 20s.

The major cons about living in Suwon are: It's quite far from Seoul, It'll take you between 30-75 mins to get to the nicer places in Seoul, which can be a major hassle at times.
There is a also limited variety in "non-Korean" foods and amenities.

However, on the plus side, Suwon is a major transport hub, and thus you can take buses and trains almost anywhere in the country.

Simply put, outside of Seoul, you'll struggle to do much better than Suwon, but you can easily do worse.

You're right round the corner from me. Uman 1 dong is right next to Ajou University. There are some good bus links to Seoul, you'll be near Hwaesong fortress (which is about the best thing Suwon has to offer). You are a 5000 won cab ride away from Yongtong dong (which is where the EFL Teacher population tends to hang out on the weekend). You are also a short cab ride away from Bundang, which is a nice area full of western style restaurants, good shopping, and nice parks. All in all you could have fared far worse.

I'm moving there in May!

From everything I've read, it seems like living in Suwon is like living in Brooklyn and taking the subway into Manhattan and I did that for 2 years.

I'll let you know when I arrive, maybe we can go exploring together!
