Is it possible to change jobs in korea mid-contract? Just wondered what you have to do if you get a better offer and want to quit your original job. |

If you are on an E-2 visa, you have to get a letter of release from your old employer and a new visa from your new employer. |

Sort of... the OP will need a Letter of Release and a new contract; then, the new employer can apply to Immi to 'take over' sponsorship of the existing visa. No new visa is involved and the expiry date of the period of sojourn will remain unchanged. |

Oh, my bad. So if you take a new job you either take a contract for less than a year and miss out on severance or get a new visa in the middle of the contract? |

It would be dumb to take a new contract for less than a year (you've already given up the time invested in severance from the original job). When the period of sojourn expires, you get an extension to be able to complete the new, one-year contract.
The other option would be to resign, leave the country (handing in the ARC on the way out and making sure the Immi officer cancels the visa), come back on a tourist visa, assemble all the required documents, apply for a new E-2 and do a visa run to another country. |

so the Q is then, does immi allow you to take a new one-year contract if your visa ends before the new contract does? do they automatically think that you will get an extension and allow the take-over of your visa by the new employer? Is that what you meant? sorry if I am confused. |

You can transfer to a new job without having to do a visa run if you have been in your current contract for more than 10 months. However, if less than this you need to do a visa run and do all your documentation again, and a letter of release (except for the CRC). You do not need to go to your home country to get the visa (you can do it in Japan or whatever) unless you've overstayed your visa in the past. |
