Hello friends,
I am an ol' time teacher, but I'm new to Korea. Would someone please be kind enough to befriend me? I haven't met any other western people here in Daegu so far, exept a couple of very busy folks on their way to doing whatever it is they do. I am interested in having just one American or Canadian friend with just to be pals. -Cotton |

Oh boy,
I don't really know.
And even if I did, I wouldn't know how to explain it.
Perhaps we could just meet one of these days at EMart downtown. All the cabbies know that place. And we could have lunch or coffee. I'm off today. |

Fortunately, Daegu has a lot of soldiers that are really friendly. I've found the English teachers to be dicks there. Commune is a decent place, albeit loud, and Old Skool is an English Teacher bar that thankfully got taken over by USFK soldiers long ago.
Daegu is divided in quarters. The market runs down the center of town from Daegu Station on toward the Kyobo building. If you keep walking, there's a McDonald's, BK, and Bennigans (or Outback, or some other clone restaurant) there. If you take the main road East, eventually you can't go any further. Along that road, there's a fire station. That corner is the outside corner of the club district. Nobody really goes to Frog anymore, but Old Skool, Commune, Frog, and Holy Grill (for dinner) are all there.
The 836 bus service goes past Community Stadium, which is in the park where the Samsung Lions play baseball. Check http://bleacherbums.tubbee.com for the schedule. Whole lotta foreigners go to those games, and the pre-season just started up.
I don't live in Daegu, so I can't be much help past this, but galbijim is a good resource. Give it a shot. |

If you are on facebook just search Daegu and friend/join any person/group you find.
There are tons of us that go out every weekend, and contrary to what the previous poster said, there are very few "dicks" among us. I really love the Daegu party crew, and we really know how to have a good time. |

Yeah,
I was wondering what he meant by that. I have been an English teacher for many years, and I've yet to meet a "dick" among my peers. I have met some pretty horrible administrators, however. Anyway, that place he or she is refering me to looks really interesting. Could you make it possible for me and the other new person to meet you somewhere on Saturday night or Friday night? |

Welcome to Korea, man. If you're walking down the street in Daegu, and a foreign face actually makes eye contact and says 'hi' back, he's a soldier.
You know an English teacher because they walk with their head down, try to get from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible, and when engaged in conversation, reply with "Yes" "No" or "I don't know, sorry."
You know a soldier because he's walking with his head up, aware of his surroundings, checking out women or upon seeing pigeons try to make more pigeons behind a planter says "Yeah, get some!" to no one in particular, and when asked a question, responds in full and complete sentences, giving all details required for an informative answer. |

So you don't even live in the damn city and you are trying to generalize all of us who do? You don't know what you are talking about, so just stop talking before you sound any more cynical and antisocial than you already do.
Cotton, the best way to hook up with the social crew is to get on facebook. We all live in different corners of the city, so facebook is how we coordinate our weekend and midweek plans.
Better yet, every Wednesday night at the Holy Grill we have dinner. People stop in from 7-9pm and have dinner. After that, the bar Communes has open microphone night starting at 11pm, which is always a blast. I suggest stopping in this week to both events and just trying to strike up a conversation with the foreigners you see. |
