I just got fined 300,000 won for not having my car inspected this year. My wife is talking to them now on the phone to try and work something out.

If you have a car that is more than 3 years old, you have to get it inspected. They should send you some notice in the mail, but in my case they didnt have my current address. If you've moved, make sure they have your address. It should be your city's car registration people.

Yes, and they do these things about every 1 1/2 years. They cost around 35,000 won when I get my Matiz done.

They REALLY like to nail your butt and get money off of you for not having it inspected.

If you own a car here, you need to be very sure you have all of your address information updated at the Dong office, your insurance company, and anywhere else you can think of. Don't be late. You can find yourself screwed and owing hundreds of thousands of won in a matter of months!

I got nailed 300,000 won for not getting my car inspected on time plus another 300,000 won for not updating my new address with the car registration office. I was not a happy camper!

Don't you have to get a car inspected on a regular basis in the country you come from?

Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

If you were unable or unwilling to learn the terms and conditions of your licence, it's your fault. Pay your fine and drive safely.

Naw. In my province of Canada, you only have to show your car has been inspected when it is over 10 or 15 years old, to get your car re-registered. If you dont have that, you cant get a new registration.

I blame my wife, she's Korean. Evil or Very Mad

I got my car inspected last year around this time. I was sent notices on which included the amount of the late penalty charges. After procrastinating for quite some time, I finally had it done. I can't remember the exact amount of the late fee, but it was NOWHERE near 300, 000. It was between 30-50,000, definitely not higher (I'm thinking about 35,000--10,000 after so many days late, beyond that add 25,000). This was for gyeonggi-do but even seoul shouldn't be much higher than that. You might want to double check this with gov't websites and info centers.

I wouldn't own a car here. Any accident, it's going to cost you. And then there's so much I don't understand about Koreans since you can't just talk to them or ask questions in most instances.

What? Really? The inspection in Nova Scotia is yearly. ie: you have to get a new inspection sticker every year regardless of how old the vehicle is. The cops do random checks all the time, and it's a pretty hefty fine if you're driving a non-inspected vehicle. What province are you from?

there was absolutely no mandatory government inspections in the Canadian province of B.C. until the late nineties, regardless of age of vehicle

but a government already bloated by bureaucracy is eager to add forms of indirect taxation through licensing fees and other such costs

the police now spend more time giving tickets out for lack of license and "personal" safety (seatbelt and helmet usage) than they do catching traditional criminals who hurt people and steal things

and to younger generations who don't know any better, it all seems normal

the world is slowly going mad

(I'm getting old I guess)

Rok, he got nailed for 300,000 because he missed the deadline for the 35,000 won check-up. Highway robbery.

You are not getting old. You are just old enough to see the trend in that country. And you don't like what you have seen over the years.

I also don't like the direction they are moving in. And that's a big reason I don't live there.
