I was laid off because school can't afford me.

So, they're willing to pay my salary for 30 days minus my airfare to Korea because I've only been working for 1 month.

I understand that the Labour Board says they must give at least 30 days notice. But what about airfare?

Anything to back me up???? Or should I just accept 30 days pay minus airfare????

You're airfare is a contractual matter so read your contract.

The 30 days notice or 30 days salary is to the letter of the law.

See that's a bunch of crap. There should be something in the Law that deals with schools who bring someone over here and then end up not being able to afford them after only a month.

It's wrong that he should have to pay back the airfare.

Step 1: Get your Letter of Release.

Step 2: Find new job.

Step 3: Have new job re-imburse you for your airfare so you can then re-imburse your current job. Or just have them re-imburse your current job directly and eliminate the middle man.

Problem solved.

You're getting 30 days pay that you don't have to work for (adhering to what the law demands), and you're airfare to Korea is being deducted from that amount (adhering to what your contract demands). That's not so bad. If they were making you work for those 30 days, yeah, I'd be pissed. But...

Sounds honest and fair.

If you were laid off from most jobs, when the company is in financial trouble, you would get nothing. 30 days paid is decent.

You can sign a new 12 month contract and get your airfare paid in cash. You might have to wait to the 6 month mark to get it, but some schools will pay this as a bonus.

As I understand it though, public schools normally won't pay airfare if you're already here. Some teacher with more public school experience will have to comment if this is not correct. Perhaps sometimes they will.

Really? The wording of the public school advertisements would suggest otherwise. I really hope that's not the case, cause that'll really put a kink in my plans.

If your airfare is in your contract, take it to the labor board. If not, that's awful, but nothing you can do. Otherwise the hagwon is being fair.

If you've got your foreigner card, ask for a letter of release from your current job and that should square everything.

That's not true at all. The law says they're required to give 30 days notice (or pay in lieu) only after working there for 6 months. Anything before that and they can just fire you the day of with no notice.

Unless of course you have something about 30days notice included in your contract.

They shoudn't be deducting your air fare. No matter what previous posters have said on this thread. That's just wrong. It was their decision to fire you for financial reasons. I'd fight that if I were you.

Don't most hagwon contracts say you have to pay back the airfare before six months if you quit OR are terminated?

EPIK pays a 1.3 million won "entrance allowance" (airfare)

However if you are hired in country, they only pay 500,000 won.

I believe GEPIK has a similar arrangement...unless they changed.

If you quit. If you have to pay it back for being fired then the contract shouldn't have been signed. Depending on why you got fire, of course. Guess it would have to go into some details...

I am embroiled in a similar mess- getting what I'm owed after being fired (unjustly). I contacted the labour board, and I suggest you do the same. Call the hotline (on your cell) at 1350, then push 7 for English. They speak English well.

Good luck!!
