I was wondering if I could share an activity with you, then get some more activities in return.
I have some middle and high school students who study texts. These are high level texts, like newspaper articles of about 400 words with vocab such as, 'obsolete,' 'conscientious,' 'closest ally...'
Students have read the text and know the dictionary meaning of the vocab .... but they have never really used it.
Here's one activity I use: Kids write between them 20 words from the text on the board. Easy words are better. Each student draws up a 9 grid bingo form on own paper. One by one around the class they explain in other ways about words on their paper. So, they may have 'closest' so they may verbally explain as 'near,' 'with me ...' that kind of explanation. Eventually someone gets nine words crossed off.
That's one activity. But, I need more.
There is one thing, the texts they study only have a short life - just one or two class times only - so they cannot work with the text for weeks to develop themes etc. It's all about the vocab. It's a bit of an antithesis of my teaching method, but I do need to find some more activities at this time, so appreciate any replies. |

I really like this vocab. ppt game I made using piclits.com Put up the picture, students brainstorm associated words. Then they share their own words and compare against the next slide with the words. 1 point for every matching word!
However, the point should be that the students somehow use the vocab in a communicative context / meaning filled way(not just recognizing the word - this is but 1/8th of acquisition). Still this game can be one step in that process.
Search Vocab on EFL classroom , we've had loads of worksheets / activities in many recent discussions uploaded. Also a lot of ideas in our Resources tab, check the vocab folder there or especially under Mediafire.

Thanks Ddeubel, I'll look into that shortly. I have some more of yours, ppt stuff that I use now and then and will cruise the site again.

Always appreciate the support. I guess the site is good because it's "hand made" 
There is lots that is useful to any teacher but in particular at the moment, it is most useful to teachers like yourself who have some experience and need a place to get inspired and find materials which they can adapt to their own particular needs. In the future I hope to develop the site so that it will help beginning teachers more. It takes time, one brick at a time...
