Can I go to homeplus and buy a mini unit that plugs into my wall?

or do I have to go get it prefessionally installed? My apt is on the tenth floor of the building and I don't think the last tenants had air-con.

Do I just call up air-con people and they take care of the rest? Or do I have to negotiate with the building to get permission to install the unit?

Talk to your landlord and get permission, because they may need to drill a hole in your wall.

You can buy a new one installed for under 300,000 won. That will be a 4 to 6 pyung unit. That size is plenty for a one-room place. 6 to 8 pyung for a 1 bedroom plus livingroom. I suggest Winia, Samsung, LG or Carrier brand. Cheaper than Homeplus. Have a Korean help you buy and make sure installation is included in the price for the one you get. Make sure the installation guys are: 1. allowed to drill a hole, and 2. BOTHER to drill a hole. Some cheap "hurry hurry" install guys will try to break a hole in your window or just snake the tube out of your door (leaving a large gap for air to blow through) and call it good. I suggest having your landlord present to make sure they do it right, although this may not be possible. Prices here. Use Internet Explorer for this site, and click on the 2nd from left photo icon for wall-hanging ones:

My wife and I got ours at a used shop. A nice big one for about 500,000. That included the installation (and delivery), which I didn't think much of at the time. Of course when the guy showed up to install it the process took almost two hours. He had to drill holes through a couple of walls and then installed a thing to hang in on outside. I didn't get permission from my landlord, but after seeing it done probably should have.

Is there any reason why the landlord may refuse permission?

Also, I'm pretty sure the last guy in my place had no aircon. Is it possible that being on the tenth floor, he/she was able to endure the heat? Or do Koreans just tolerate heat better than westerners?

If you want to buy a new one, get your Korean friend to check the internet shopping sites. You'll probably get a better price.

Air conditioners are still considered a luxury here. They just tolerate it, really.. and to be honest, it's only really hot for a couple of months (July and August, and may be the first bit of September). I can't do it, but they can!

The reason why the landlord may refuse to let you install an aircon is because you need to drill a hole in the wall for the pipe to go through and obviously if the next tenant isn't going to have an aircon then they are going to have a job covering the hole up.

Because if it is done badly you will have gaping holes in your wall.

Which is damage to other peoples property.

You could check ofcourse if there weren't any previous installations done. The holes could have been patched up, so you can re-use those.

Great, if you don't mind, what will the final bill be? We're going to install either two singles or a combo unit soon.

I paid 305,000 won for the unit and 35,000 to have it installed in my balcony room. They wanted another 100,000 to install it on my balcony railing but I figured that doing so wasn't really worth paying extra for.

Is there one landlord for the entire apt or are there individual landlords for each apt?

I'm gonna get the unit within a month or two. Last night, I found a circular hole leading to the outside balcony area. So I'm guessing this is the AC hole. Hope it goes well. thanks for the assistance

If there is already a hole for the A/C duct I wouldn't worry too much about asking anyone's permission.

They wanted 100,000 to install on the balcony railing?!?!?

OMG, I'm glad you shared that. I have a special place on the railing, and I will now ask places if they want extra for that. They can sit and spin!

I had one installed a couple weeks ago. It never crossed anyone's mind (school admin who bought it, co-teacher who arranged installation) to bother the owner for permission. Its just something tenants do.

A hole in the wall is no biggie. Previous tenant had theirs in the bedroom & that hole just got papered over. I wanted mine in the livingroom.

Took a while to bore the hole through about a foot of concrete. The inside wall-mounted unit is unobtrusive & they just sat the bulky fan unit on the balcony facing a sliding window. I commend the installers for a very tidy job running the conduit between the two units. I'm sure every installation is a different puzzle for them & these guys, like every other Korean utility technician I've dealt with, were smart & efficient.

Not sure about the total cost. School admin discovered some unspent budget while I was away on vacation & just ordered it. Half a million maybe, its a pretty swank Whisen from LG.

Hot weather, bring it on!

Last year my apartment came with A/C but it was nowhere near as nice or large as my current one nor did it have a bathtub.
