do you really think they're not trying? i can't say about the management, but i'd say it's in the players' interest to give it what they've got. it might increase their marketability to their teams or more likely, for trades. someone mentioned not having heard of a lot of the starters (me too). take peavy. pretty good pitcher, but he's with the san diego padres which is a team pretty much no one cares about (even in san diego)...this is a pretty good chance to get his name out there a bit more. |

The players and managemnent are trying insofar as much as it doesnt interfere with their regular spring training preparation tactics. The teams and the players were promised this. Last game Peavy got hit hard, but the manager didnt take him out of the game because this is what you do in an exhibition game in order for the pitcher to get his practice in. A few US players have already left the team due to slight injuries. The manager missed a game to go to a wedding. If these games were considered important, none of these things would never happen.
The US players are all professionals, they dont need incresed marketability. They need to stay healthy to keep the millions of dollars coming in. |

the cards lent a pitcher (rincon) to mexico last time. mexico left him in too long. shredded him up good. hasn't pitched since. another couple million down the drain.
the cards starting catcher (molina) is #3 in the PR cathers list. instead of attending cards training and working with the pitchers (this is kinda vital) he sits on the PR bench.
the cards infield coach (oquendo) is managing in the WBC while the team that pays him to be the infield coach is training up to converted outfielders to play the infield without him.
yeah, MLB tolerates this for publicity/marketing but on the team level it hurts the squads.
selig worst commish ever. |

MLB is crap.
The first thing MLB needs to do is institute a salary cap. Secondly, they need to decrease the number of games. If they played less games, then each game would have more relevance.
Lastly, they need names superstars that do not play for the Yankees or the Red Sox. If they had a salary cap, then the talent would be spread out. |

America just beat Puerto Rico the second time around, thus eliminating them from the World Baseball Classic. |

A question from someone who doesn't know - out of the top 50 players in the MLB, how many of them are playing in the WMC?
Basically, are the best players playing? |

I know on the US side, only a small fraction of their best is playing. Only Jimmy Rollins and Jake Peavy are among the best Americans at their positions.
As for the rest of the teams, I think Japan and Korea has all their best players. Off the top of my head, the Dominicans were missing Albert Pujos, Alex Roid-riguez (who was planning to play for some Latin street cred, despite being an American citizen who's lived in America his whole life), and Manny Ramirez- arguably the three best hitters in baseball. Johan Santana, probably the best pitcher in baseball, did not play for Venezuela.
I'd say the Dominicans had the potential for the best offense, and the US had the potential for the best pitching and one of the best offenses, but both are far from their best for the tournament. |
