For those who don't know, taekkyeon

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taekkyeon

I'm looking for a place to take affordable classes in Seoul? I found a center in kangnam and was wondering what people's experience was with training here in Seoul....Is it expensive, do they expect some diehard commiment....is it filled with kids like tae kwon do classes here?

The class I took (all 4 lessons) was entirely children, kinda expensive (W80,000 a month) and was honestly pretty difficult.

You'll start every day with an hour of yoga-like stretches. Following that on alternating days we did tumbling, balance and striking. It was a completely different experience than what I have done in Taekwondo or Karate.

I took classes for the year I was there and got my 1st dan. It was 80,000 won per month which sounds expensive but take into consideration that you train five days a week hardcore for at least an hour, it was worth it. Also, I was in a class with teenagers, so I didn't have to train with little kids.

There's a dojang on every corner. If you're willing to learn some Korean, there's bound to be a gwan jong who'll take you in.

Are you talking about taekwondo or taekkyon? Taekkyon places are hard to find in my area.

As Horangi said, Taekkyeon is quite hard to find. From memory, there are currently 3 Taekkyeon associations in Korea. I think the newest one has expanded quite a lot. Beware that some (maybe many) instructors have Taekwondo backgrounds, so their technique might be "tainted"...especially in the newer associations.

I have a Korean friend who is a qualified master under the original association. He has told me that, like all martial arts in Korea, the trick is to find a gym where the master teaches properly. Taekkyeon is not the easiest style to learn, especially if you are not flexible, but it can be very effective.

This.

The first few lessons reminded me more of a yoga class.
