Korea plans to send more volunteers abroad, promote its martial arts and language, and share its growth experience with more developing countries as part of efforts to enhance its national image.
The Presidential Council on Nation Branding yesterday announced a set of programmes aimed to boost Korea's standing in national brand recognition from 33rd to 15th by 2013.
The plans also include expanding international student exchanges, better support for multicultural families and encouraging good etiquette and hospitality among citizens.

This is going to be done to improve their image but not because they give a rats arse.....so lovable. |

Mr Breen does it again:
To make this point another way, nationalism should be left at home in tourism promotion. Think about it. Would you visit a country that implicitly said, ``Come spend your money and then leave, you foreign bastards"? Only Australia could get away with that. The purpose of promoting Korean food is to attract tourists. This is a commercial exercise that should not be hijacked by patriotic purists.

Another famous dish is toad-in-the-hole, made with sausages cooked in Yorkshire pudding. The name was a marketing idea from someone who thought that the bit of sausage sticking out looked like a toad's head. In the army, it is known as turd-in-the-blanket.
What can the promoters of Korean cuisine learn from this? |
To laugh at yourselves! The one thing so void in this land; probably the thing I hate most. Grow up and hate yourselves like we do! |

"caring and lovable" ??????
other than being so freakin' ridiculous - what exactly is this supposed to mean??
the most xenophobic country on Earth - caring about what??
certainly not about the huge numbers of babies allowed to be adopted out of the country - |
They do tend to pay attention if after the adopted person has made a name for themselves or if they can use them later on
"BUT YOU'RE KOREAN, YOU HAVE TO SUPPORT US!!!" |

They are housing and barely feeding the captain using the money they took from the company against all of maritime regulations, to be fair |

There is nothing wrong with being a social critic.
I must admit that it is good that they realize they have an image problem. They also admitted that they have a problem with etiquette. Baby steps...
The problem is, as other posters mentioned, they are not playing to their strengths. Caring and lovable? Care bear Korea? Doesn't seem very fitting for this country.
In conclusion, they are on the right track but they are going about it the wrong way. Just like how they want to promote Korean food worldwide but making Kimchi the centerpiece of the whole promotion. |

How about "Korea Irrelevant"
The first thing the K government can do is start an anti staring campaign. I mean, I don't mind getting spit on, being told I am a criminal at the bank because I am a foreigner, getting shafted by two employers, being called a loser because I came to help people learn English, being called fat one year then too skinny the next, and getting accosted for walking with a Korean woman all the while trying to be culturally sensitive (even though the Koreans couldn't give a rat's ass about any other culture but their own). Those things are no big deal compared to the staring. How about "Korea Staring", maybe "Korea Spitting"? "Korea Vomiting"? |

I occassionally look through other asian country forums on this site just to get a general overview about what other teachers lives are like and none compare to Korea inregard to the perception (predominantely not flattering) that are posted on this site.
I think Korea knows they have an image problem on the world stage. But again, they are going about it the wrong way. Are they taking sample polls from expats living here or even tourists that visit here about their feelings/opinions about life in Korea.
Just like everything that happens in this country they don't address the problem or issue directly and establish some airy-fairy idea that is more about show and little on substance.
Just like teaching English. Koreans approach this by spending money on classrooms, having an attractive foreign teacher and they now believe that their children will somehow learn English better. However, they don't look at the core of the problem; their attitudes and approach to the method of teaching.
And this can be said for this ridiculous approach to the image of Korea. If we say something about Korea and show some great pictures about Korea (loveable?) then of course, everyone will think that way. They really got to get their head out of the sand and realize that people don't think the same.
I enjoy living here. Met some great people. Like the food etc. But these are the deep elements that we all experience. What we see on the surface is sometimes not too apealling.
So, before they start thinking about some jazzy new slogan that really doesn't reflect their culture and society, they need to educate what is wrong and how to we rectify it.
Until they rectify this approach, the view of Korea/Koreans will remain the same - in a negative light. |
