I guess tricky kpeople could not wiggle their way out of this one:
U.S. court orders S. Korean pop star to pay $8 million
SEOUL, March 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korean singer and actor Rain's agency said Friday it will soon decide on its response to a U.S. court ruling ordering it to pay some US$8 million in compensation for canceling a concert in Honolulu in 2007.
"This is a result we would never have expected," said Jung Wook, president of JYP Entertainment. "We will decide our future course of legal action in a few days after discussing it with attorneys who are on their way back (to Seoul)."
On Thursday, a Honolulu federal jury found Rain and his agency guilty of breaching a contract with Click Entertainment Inc. to perform a concert two years ago and ordered them to pay the Hawaiian promoter punitive charges and compensation.
Rain's concert was canceled a few days before the scheduled date of June 15 in 2007 at Aloha Stadium, the first stop on his U.S. tour. The tickets were sold for maximum $300 each.
While Click Entertainment claims it lost more than $1.5 million for the cancellation and suffered damages to its business reputation, Rain argues the concert stage was not properly set up for him. He also says he was not able to use his name in the United States because of a copyright challenge from a U.S. Beatles tribute band also called Rain.
The 26-year-old singer, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, is one of the most popular male celebrities in Korea and is also widely known across Asia. He has gained some fame in the United States since appearing on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," and will star in the upcoming Hollywood movie "Ninja Assassin." |

So, The Korean "Rain" is more popular than some crap Beatles Tribute band. Yet, he cant use his name cuz some coverband already has it?
I'd understand if "Rain" was taken by some platium artist, but a cover band?
Secondly, this case should've gone to settlement. Rain's label (the people responsible for the business) dropped the ball. They didn't do their job. I doubt Rain had anything to do with the whole thing. He, like many pop singers in the US, Korea, and all over the world, are dancing monkeys for the music industry. |

It's nice to see Koreans being forced to pay when they break their contracts. Punitive damages are an especially good lesson for Koreans.
Let's hope this makes the Korean news and Korea gets a little dose of real world reality. |

Imagine you have a big open class coming up. It is very important that it be done as best as you can. In fact, it is so important, it is being held at the district education office. You tell the people in charge you need a computer and a TV for your lesson. They tell you everything will be fine. You plan your open class expecting everything to be there that you asked for.
Then, at the last minute you find out that the equipment is not there. Your whole lesson was planned assuming you'd have everything ready.
Is it your own fault because you should've made sure all the equipment was in place and working prior to the class?
Or is it the fault of the organizers for having not doing what was asked? |

If you comparing this to schools in Korea, likely everything was done at the last minute or plans were changed without asking the other party. That old Bbali Bbali attitude.
It is a distinct possibility that Rain had incompetent management that didn't do their jobs well.
Also, the Korean agency was probably too cheap to pay the cover band money for use of the name Rain. |

Jokes aside, kudos to Rain for making so many millions and getting laid by the hottest babes and making it look easy when most of us can only dream. |
