Good luck with that.

I'm not risking it just to get a few English menu buttons.

Well, it's not about that. I can read Korean fine, and will learn all the various words in time.

It's about the region settings. The modchip works for Wii disc-based games from other regions, but if I just wanted new games I would have bought a 360 instead. More than half of what I'm interested in is the Virtual Console, Wii Ware, and Gamecube compatibility. So far, I've been mucking around with VC and WiiWare and just... not having much success, at all.

Maybe I'm just missing something, though?

Ok, maybe this will help you. I haven't installed a lot of wads but I've got a few. I had trouble with WoG. It was NTSC, but not working. I was getting the error message saying it wasn't a good channel. I ran it through a program called freethewads and then it worked fine.

Here are my thoughts.

1. You must get an NTSC title (Kor Wii = NTSC). I'm not sure about the wad region changer, as I haven't tried it. Install with wadmanager.
2. If it doesn't work uninstall and run it through freethewads and reinstall it.

I haven't had any trouble so far. VC isn't working for you either? I haven't tried it yet, but I don't see why not. Maybe I'll try this week.

Just to provide some specifics...

I've gotten 5 games to work so far.

Super Mario RPG (VC) worked the first time.

Maboshi's Arcade, Mega Man 9, Dr. Mario Online Rx, and LostWinds--all WiiWare--they all worked only after I ran the WADs through the region changer and set them to "REGIONFREE".

Everything else--maybe about 15 others I tried--didn't work.

Sounds like you got a messed up Wii. Sell it and buy an American one.

Using the freethewads program, I've managed to get working about 2/3 of the titles I try. All N64, most WiiWare, most Genesis/Master System/TG16, etc. works. Not too much NES and SNES works, though--just a few. Sucks, because SNES is my favorite system.

Will keep playing around to get the rest working. Maybe I lack an update of a certain file for SNES games or something, for all I know... will try to do that without actually updating.

Edit: Disc games work perfectly. I've burned about 10, and all 10 boot and run perfectly.... so I don't think there's anything wrong with the Wii. Just with "backup" Virtual Console WADs on K-Wii.

An update, if anyone's looking in the future and needs the info.

Wii "backup" disc games work perfectly.

Wii Ware - I've gotten about half of them to work using "freethewads."

Instead of Virtual Console, I've switched to mostly using emulators. On wiibrew.org you can find NES, SNES, Genesis, TurboGrafx, Sega Master System, ScummVM, Game Boy/Color/Advance emulators that work perfectly. Put the ROMS on an SD card and run them directly from there, saving TONS of space on the Wii's internal memory. It's awesome, actually--I have a whole SNES and Game Boy Advance (my two favorite systems) library available for instant play.

There's also an N64 emulator but it runs kinda slow on Wii, so the official Virtual Cosole WAD files (ran through freeloader) work better for N64. Also there's a Commodore 64 emulator that emulates the real computer where you need to type in commands to start games, etc., but I don't know how to do that so I use the official WADs for those, and Neo Geo games (no emulator), too.

Underwaterbob, tried to write you a PM, but the stupid 25 post limit prevented me...

Anyways, I have my Wii, and just bought a couple Gamecube controllers, memory card, even the DK bongos, and have a bunch of games here... using Gecko OS, and using the Gamecube Backup Launcher... I just get green screens with either one.

How do you play them? Or any tips on something I may need to install to get them working?

I have no idea. You're doing exactly the same thing as I am. I got the green screen once, rebooted and it worked fine. You could try messing with the settings in Gecko OS?

I played through burned both Metroid Primes and Zelda without a hitch.

You've PMed me before. I wonder why the 25 post limit has kicked in now...

EDIT: Sorry, that was someone else who PMed me.

managed to figure out how to put wad files onto my wii. (Korean version, chipped in Yongsan).

Used this tutorial which was helpful- be careful btw as you could brick it, so depends on how much you want the little extra games etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4PGVr7OxFQ

When I install the wads the logo comes up on the main menu, though I get some message in Korean- can't read it, white text on black background- any ideas what that means?

Perhaps it won't play these wads as they are not Korean regaion, anyone know any links to Korean wad files floating about on the net, or know of any particular wads of any region which do work with a Korean wii?

Thanks

I got my Korean Wii changed to a US version last weekend. I don't know exactly what they did but he said something about changing the board, although that could have been BS, I'm sure he only did something to the software as the Mii channel is still Korean.

I haven't had any problems yet either. I'm a bit worried that games will start requiring firmware 4.0 soon.
