I'm pulling these figures out of my ass, but I'd say:
Rookies: 60:40 guys:gals
Mid-termers: 70-30
Long-termers: 80:20 |

I'd say overall it's probably 75:25 (men:women). |

Guys are more likely to seek the adventure, like the independence, not mind the isolation, not mind the sexism, and take to the locals of the opposite sex more than gals.
Go to Thailand and the ratio's more like 90:10. |

i think the biggest reason why foreign women don't come to korea is because of the sexist attitudes of people here - even well-educated koreans. it has nothing to do with a lack of adventure or inability to deal with isolation. and yeah, we don't take to local guys here mostly because of the previously mentioned attitude. |

My principle doesn't take me seriously, and I have a pair.
Of balls.
I've never noticed any major difference, Principles. Hakwon directors, they're all of too high a status to deal with any of us plebs, Y chromosone or none. |

Real reason: not too many girls interested in East Asian cultures compared to Europe.
Ask any western girl about the places she'd like to visit, and aside from a few popular south east Asia beach locations(Thailand) or maybe Tokyo, most would rather hit Europe...
If the same job opportunities existed for teaching in Europe, I'd expect the ratio to be more even if not lopsided. Women love to travel....they talk about it more than men in my experience.
And the fact that many girls not being interested in Asian guys ain't exactly helping things. |

...and even some well-educated white guys!
But seriously, it does have something to do with the adventure / isolation factor. When you get out to rural Korea even fewer foreign teachers are female. In my district I can think of two who didn't come over as a couple with a guy. To be sure there are some women who can cope very well on their own, but the percentage seems somewhat lower than with guys. I think that most people are quite ignorant about the nature of Korea's sexism before they come over. |
