Hi there everyone,
I am basically Malaysian.
And English is not the mother language for all Malaysian.
But all classes at college are conducted in English.
I graduated from Swinburne University, Melbourne, Australia.
Been lecturing in local college using English for couple of years already.
I want to change to a new environment of teaching.
But I noticed that all the schools out there in Korea, require native speakers.
What if I am not a native speaker?
Is there any way that I can get myself qualify to teach English in Korea?
What are the steps or course that I have to take?
Would appreciate some help~ Thank you. |

I hesitate to do this, but what the hell I've got a couple beers in me and if I don't someone else will, so here it goes.
The first thing you need to do is write a post without grammatical mistakes.
Sorry Korea is not for you my friend, I do wish you the best. |

I have to agree. Assuming the OP isn't a troll, he basically highlights the problems with non-native speakers. A ton of simple errors creep in and no amount of "brushing up those English" will help. No one is arguing that we can't understand him, (heck he came across better than many posters on this board) but if you are going to be paying top-dollar for your child to study English from an English speaker, then you want someone who won't make these mistakes. (Or you'd be better off with a Korean English teacher whose Korean ability to explain words and concepts will somewhat make-up for the English errors that will inevitably creep in).
To the OP: From what I've heard there are some jobs available to countries which aren't from the 'original 7' native speaking countries. I'm not sure if Malaysia is on the list (I believe, it's India, Singapore and the Philippines, but i may be mistaken). However, these jobs are basically entry level public school jobs paying between 60-80% of what a "native" speaker would earn and they are having trouble getting off the ground due to resistance from schools, principals and parents.

| Ok...Would u guys see any problems if an Asian American were to apply for a teaching job? I've been in the states since I was 8 and speak fluent English like a native .. And I don't have the Asian accent either...any potential problems? |

Your Asian American. Yes you can find work here. Like I posted in another thread, it will not be as easy. I have seen people from all walks of life here.

You are an American (i.e. a Native Speaker). As long as you have the correct documents, you will find a job. Some Hagwons might be hesitant to employ you, but youll have no problems getting into the public system. |

Look, there's no way around it. You need to possess a passport from one of the approved countries. Sorry buddy.
I think your English is just fine. It's not subpar, but I've seen/heard worse. |
