Hello all,

I'm a white Canadian male, 21 years old, no post-secondary education and not much of a work history.

I've looked through the job postings, and they all require/request a university degree. I realize public schools are not a possibility for me, but are the people hiring online for hagwons flexible on the whole degree requirement? In other words, do I stand a chance of getting a hagwon to actually hire me online and pay for my relocation?

If not, if I were to travel to Korea on my own dime and then look for a job, would that improve my chances of landing a job?

Go ahead. Come on over and work illegally. Then get arrested, detained, and deported. And then the rest of us who are here long-term and doing things legally have to suffer the backlash from your stunt.

Better yet, get your act together and finish university. Of course, you have to start university first. Or look elsewhere for a job that doesn't require a university degree.

Here's another consideration: If you work for a hagweon owner who's dishonest enough to hire you, then the owner's dishonest enough to not pay you.

There are hakwons who are "flexible" on the degree requirement, but they tend to be "flexible" on things like your pay and benefits as well.

In other words if you come over to work illegally, expect to be paid less than what was agreed upon in the contract and for the hakwon to renege on airfare and severance. And as an illegal worker there is NOTHING you can do about it.

Expect to be shafted six ways to Sunday. Oh yes and if you get caught expect a whopping fine, detention in a Korean jail and deportation.

Not enough fun yet? Well there are many people here who dislike illegal workers (as they depress the labor market for the rest of us) and who will think nothing of turning you in. There are others who won't say a thing...but who are you going to know how to trust? Could be a very lonely year as you never know if the guy next to you might turn you in to the authorities if you somehow tick him off.

In sum you could look back on coming here to work illegally as the dumbest move in your life. And with the exchange rate falling like a stone...it's not all that great right now.

You don't stand a chance. It's time to get your adult education started and finished before even thinking about coming to Korea. People who teach here illegally make the news frequently in a bad way.

There really isn't a process - you get a tourist visa, come to Korea, and canvas your area for a job. It's -possible- to find illegal work before you get here, but you'd have to be proactive and email people yourself - recruiters and schools aren't going to advertise that they hire illegal workers.

I agree with everyone else - lots of countries in Latin America and Southeast Asia don't require degrees.. I'd say start there instead.

gotta agree with most of the posts above. don't go until you get your degree, it's not worth the hassle and when you get caught it just looks bad for the current crop of teachers, the criminal check and medical tests are already a major pain.

Well, I wouldn't advertise the fact that I'm teaching illegally. I may be uneducated but I'm not stupid.

Anyway, since the previous two posters have mentioned it, and Dave won't let me post in the main forums yet, which countries openly hire foreign teachers without degrees?
